Verbs of movement and modality in Southeastern Tepehuan Gabriela García Salido University of Texas at Austin-CONACYT Universidad de Sonora gabrielagarcia@mail.utexas.edu Southeastern Tepehuan exhibits limited complex verb sentences formed by the combination of two verbs with no overt subordination or coordination markers. Instead these constructions include two verbs: a verb of movement and a verb of modality. In addition, this kind of construction exhibits some properties of “serial verbs”: (i) they share the same subject and tense; (ii) they contain two or more verbs without overt markers of coordination or subordination and (iii) the actions expressed by the verbs are simultaneous. An important issue to consider here is the question of how to treat these expressions since they exhibit properties of a single event. The goal of this work is to explore the behavior of this sentence type in Southeastern Tepehuan. Some examples that illustrate these phenomena are shown below. The grammatical information about Southeastern Tepehuan is based on the reference work of Thomas L. Willett (1991) A Reference Grammar of Southeastern Tepehuan and the unpublished dictionary by the same author. The data cited for this work and subsequent analysis come from my field-work in Durango (2003-2006) with Marcelino Mendía Cumplido and Virginia Flores, both native speakers of Tepehuan.
