Luna creciente 3 (Fall, 2014) - 66“No,” he said. “Joseph, if you want,we...”Furious, Joseph kicked him out of thebed.“Get out!” he shouted. “Get out of here, you bastard! I’ll find another one who want todo it! I’m not mad! You hear me?! I’m not mad!Get out of here! If you’re not going to do it, Idon’t want see you anymore! Out! Out! Get out!I’m not mad!”Robert went out of the dorm. Even withthe door closed, Joseph’s screams still could beheard. What could he do? He did not have anyproblem of taking that picture out of the dorm, but that would mean he would agree withsomebody that, undoubtedly, seemed being verydisturbed. Was that what he really wanted?Certainly, not. What Joseph needed was anothertype of help. Taking that picture out meant toaccept a story he thought it was senseless.Yet, on the other hand, it was obviousthat something was happening inside his friend.Samuel appeared at the end of thecorridor, with a tray with coffee and sandwiches.“So, what do you think?” he asked.“He’s totally out of control... Hasanybody seen him?”“Well, you know how he is... He doesnot let anybody helps him. The only thing heasks me is to destroy that painting, but...” Hedoubted. “Honestly, I am afraid of going withthe flow, and making the situation worse.”“But you really think the picture...”“I do not know what to say. He insists itmoves, and he has even forced me to sit in frontof it several times to see he is not lying, and thepicture truly moves. But I have not noticeanything.”“I know a friend who’s psychiatrist.Perhaps he might be helpful. I’ll call him.”“That would be great. Thanks.” Samuelpointed the tray with his eyes. “Do you want totake something?”“No, thank you”“Well, at least let me put this for takingaway. I do not want to waste it.”They went down to the kitchen. WhileSamuel put the sandwiches in a box, Robertfinally decided to take a cup of coffee. Samuelalways prepared an excellent coffee. His work inthat house had always been excellent, and thatwas something Joseph had never been able toappreciate. Observing him, Robert askedsomething that sometimes came to his mind.“Samuel, how have you been able totolerate him for so many years?”“I beg your pardon?”“Joseph. How many years have youbeen working in this house?”“Almost forty, I think. The truth is Ihave already lost the count.”“Have you never thought of leavinghim? I mean... Not even now, with thissituation?”“Why? No. Why do you ask that?”“Well... You’re going to be eighty nextmonth. This house is enormous, and it demandsa lot of work for just one person.”
Luna creciente 3 (Fall, 2014) - 67“Yes, but it is my job. Besides, I havebeen taking care of him since he was a kid. Ithink it is a matter of justice to continue doing itnow.”The answer did not convince Robert. Itwas obvious Samuel seemed not verycomfortable talking about that issue. He, on theother hand, had never been able to understandthat loyalty toward a man that, systematically, had treated him almost in a medieval way, always reminding him his position of servant.Whereas any other person had gone away manyyears ago knowing how Joseph was, Samuel hadbeen educated under other criteria, and keepinga disconcerting fidelity and respect to him.“I see,” Robert concluded. “It’s worthyof admiration what you do, Samuel. Seriously. And more considering he’s never been very kindwith you.”“Yes. But despite his bad manners andhis character, I know him much better thananybody. And, of course, I do not think hedeserves what he is suffering. Or do you thinkhe really deserves it?”Robert did not answer. Direct question,he thought.“No,” he said, slightly bewildered. “Imean... Of course not. I’ll go home and I’ll seewhat I can do.”“Good. Here you have the box.”Robert took the box with thesandwiches. He finished the coffee and stood up.“Thanks, Samuel. For everything. Asusual. Please, call me if things get worse.”“Don’t worry. Now, be careful on theroad.”“Goodbye.”#After midnight, it started to rain.Joseph could not sleep. AlthoughSamuel had given him a pill to get to sleep, heknew that closing the eyes would mean that theperson in the painting (he -–“Jesus Christ! Itsounded totally unbelievable...”) would get out,and would try to finish what he had been tryingto do. He could see how he observed him.Robert had left open a small opening in thecover of the painting, and through it could beseen an eye (his eye) studying him.He knew that, in any moment, he wouldget out from the painting, and would go for him.He knew neither how nor when.He only knew that he would go for him,and he could not let him do it.#Robert was sleeping when the phonerang. It was Samuel. He sounded very anxious.Joseph, he said, had disappeared.#Robert and Samuel went into Joseph’sroom. The bed was empty and messy. There wasno trail of Joseph.“I came this morning at eight,” Samuelsaid, “just as usually I do, to leave the breakfast, and I saw he was not here.”Robert opened the drawer of the tablenext to the bed.“His driver’s license and his cards aren’t
