Año 2013, núm. 4 |13Torneo de Dorado en La GuanchaPor Alfredo RodríguezOchenta y ocho pescadores a bordo de 22embarcaciones se dieron cita el fin de semanadel 12, 13 y 14 de abril en La Guancha,Ponce, en la más reciente edición del torneode dorado presentado por la Asociación dePescadores de este club.El evento se caracterizó por condicionesmarítimas extremas duranteambas jornadas de pesca. Elsábado se pescó en mares de4 a 6 pies y vientos de 15 a 18nudos del sureste. El domingoel mar se deterioró aún más.Las olas subieron a 8 pies yel viento sopló de 20 a 22nudos del sureste. La picadase concentró al sur de Guánicay al sur de Caja de Muertos aunas 14 y 15 millas mar afuera.El sábado se contabilizaronunas 4100 libras de dorado en la báscula en laGuancha. El domingo se pesaron sobre 3000libras más. La embarcación Marullito tuvo unincidente mar afuera y transfirió su pesca aotro bote participante, sin el consentimientodel comité organizador. También obviarontransferir un tripulante al segundo bote paravalidar las capturas del día. Esta situaciónconllevó la descalificación de las 443 librasque abordaron el domingo.La moraleja es que siempre hay que notificaral control del torneo cualquier cambio osituación especial. El comité organizadordictará instrucciones específicas en casos decualquier emergencia o desperfecto mecánicoen altamar. No obstante, la Marullito logróel tercer lugar en la competencia. La Polyp yLa Dueña resultaron ser los botes ganadoresen primer y segundo lugar, respectivamenteen la división de embarcaciones de más de26 pies.La categoría de botes de menos de 26 piesfue dominada por Mis Amores, seguidopor Wipiti y Sabrina en segundo y tercerlugar. Las categorías de damas y juvenilesquedaron vacantes.NOAA FISHERIES EXTENDS A TEMPORARY RULE THATINCREASED THE COMMERCIAL ANNUAL CATCH LIMITFOR YELLOWTAIL SNAPPER IN THE SOUTH ATLANTICNOAA Fisheries is extending a temporaryrule that increased the commercial annualcatch limit for yellowtail snapper from1,142,589 pounds whole weight to 1,596,510pounds whole weight. Extendingthe temporary increase ofthe commercial annualcatch limit will reduce theprobability of triggeringan in-season closure inthe commercial sector. Therecreational sector annual catchlimit is not affected by this temporary ruleextension.BackgroundThe state of Florida completed a newpopulation assessment for yellowtail snapper,which indicates the stock is neither overfished(too few fish in the population) norundergoing overfishing (fish being removedtoo quickly). This assessment indicatesharvest can be increased without jeopardizingthe health of the population. Based on theseresults, NOAA Fisheries issued a temporaryrule in November 2012, which increased thecommercial annual catch limit for yellowtailsnapper in the South Atlantic. The temporaryrule can be extended for an additional 186days.The South Atlantic FisheryManagement Councilhas submitted RegulatoryAmendment 15 to the FisheryManagement Plan for theSnapper-Grouper Fishery ofthe South Atlantic Region to NOAA Fisheriesfor review, which would make the increasedannual catch limit permanent. RegulatoryAmendment 15 should become effectivesometime in fall 2013.DatesThe new commercial annual catch limitwill continue uninterrupted through theextension of the initial temporary rule, whichis effective from November 7, 2012, throughMay 6, 2013. NOAA Fisheries is extendingthe temporary rule for an additional 186 daysbeginning May 6, 2013.
