DOS GARDENIAS ¡Lito, sal de ahí en este instante! ¡Sales o entro por ti! Ya llevaba como dos horas diciendo lo mismo, pobrecita. Cada vez que me hablaba a través de la rendija su voz y su ansiedad aumentaban, ya hasta había mentado al cinturón de cuero. Irónicamente, su angustia hacía que mi serenidad aumentara. ¡Mira que llamare a los bomberos! La casa no se está quemando, le conteste. Pobre, su angustia no lo dejaba pensar, ya no sabía ni que inventar. ¡Les llamare para que derriben la puerta! ¡Es la última vez que te lo digo Manuel, sobre aviso no hay engaño! Uso mi nombre. Si esto hubiese sido un mes atrás mis huesos ya estuvieran fuera del baño y detrás del mandil de la abuela buscando refugio del muy temido cinturón de cuero. Hay de mí, cada vez que su enojo hiciese que sus labios tiernos pronunciasen mi nombre la hora del juicio para mis nalgas se aproximaba. A pesar de esto, me gustó más como sonaba ese nombre, mi nombre, ¡Manuel! ¡Ma, nu, el! Sí, esto era mejor que Lito, desde bebe me llamaban Lito. En ese instante, como un amanecer, la absurdidad de ese sobrenombre se revelaba majestuosamente delante de mis ojos. ¿Lito? ¿Lito? ¡Solo a un idiota le dicen Lito! De repente, la ira de mi madre se convirtió en ternura— ¡mira Lito, llevas 3 horas encerrado ahí!—me murmuraba por la cerradura. Cinco, llevaba cinco horas, lo vi en el reloj de mi padre, lo dejo cerca del lavamanos y ahí había permanecido intacto por todo ese largo mes. ¡Lito, mi bebe, sal, sal de ahí!—continuaba la pobre suplicándome. De lo más profundo de mi ser e inesperadamente le ordené: ¡Yo no soy un bebé y no me digas Lito, dime Manuel! ¡Manuel!. Escuche un llanto muy profundo como si le estuvieran robando el alma a la pobre Magdalena. Pobrecita, por fin perdió todo control de si misma y golpeando la puerta, con las más profundas fuerzas de una madre desesperada, me gritaba, ¡Yo misma tumbare la puerta y te sacare de ahí! Para su mala suerte, la puerta era una muralla de cedro y sus puños nada más que algodón de azúcar que venden en la plaza. ¡Sal de ahí! ¡Sal Ahora mismo!—me suplicaba la pobrecita en medio de su histeria y confusión. Providencialmente, la voz de la abuela se hizo escuchar en medio del tumulto. Los gritos la han de ver despertado. Pero dudo que hayan sido los gritos, la abuela dormía como un tronco. Yo creo que ya era su hora de levantarse, ya casi eran las cinco de la mañana, pero aún estaba oscuro. Gracias a que se levanto la abuela porque capaz que la pobre de mi madre se hubiera fracturado una mano o por lo menos se hubiera quedado ciega después de tanto llanto. ¿Qué pasa mi niña, que es lo que pasa?—le preguntaba la abuela a mi madre en medio de sus chillidos. Mi madre no hacía nada más que berrear como Magdalena en el Calvario. Entre más le preguntaba la abuela que es lo que ocurría la sirena chillaba más fuerte. ¡Lito, Lito, eres tú el que está en el baño!—gritaba mi abuela, pero yo no conteste. ¡Lito, Lito, eres tu, contéstame mi amor, contéstame!—ella seguía insistiendo. Mi madre la interrumpió y por fin con palabras medias-audibles y llenas de llanto le dijo— ¡Ya…ya, ya no quiere que le digan Lito, quiere que le digan Manuel! ¿Manuel, Manuel eres tú?—intento una vez más la abuela. ¡Sí, soy yo abuela!—le conteste para aliviar su preocupación.
