EN TRANTORLas estrellas eran tan numerosas como la mala hierba en un campo abandonado y, porprimera vez, Lathan Devers encontró que los números situados a la derecha de la comadecimal eran de primordial importancia para calcular las órbitas a través de lashiperregiones. Existía cierta sensación de claustrofobia en la necesidad de dar saltos nosuperiores a un año luz, y una tremenda dureza en un firmamento que resplandecíaininterrumpidamente en todas direcciones. Era como estar perdido en un mar deradiación.Y en el centro de un núcleo de diez mil estrellas, cuya luz rasgaba la oscuridadcircundante, giraba el enorme planeta imperial, Trántor.Pero era más que un planeta; era el latido vivo de un imperio de veinte millones desistemas estelares. Tenía una sola función: la administración; un solo propósito; elgobierno; y un solo producto manufacturado: la ley.El mundo entero era una distorsión funcional. No había en su superficie otros objetosvivos que el hombre, sus animales domésticos y sus parásitos. No podía encontrarse niuna brizna de hierba ni un trozo de suelo sin cubrir fuera de los doscientos kilómetroscuadrados que ocupaba el Palacio Imperial.
