Vantaan ympäristömeludirektiivin mukainen meluselvitys 2012
Summary
An environmental noise assessment, as stipulated in the EU Environmental Noise Directive, was
carried out for the first time in Vantaa. This environmental noise assessment was completed in
cooperation with the capital-region municipalities and Finnish Transport Agency. During the previous
round in 2007, the City of Helsinki was the only Finnish city to take part.
According to the assessment, the number of Vantaa residents in the road and street day-eveningnight
noise level of L den
in excess of 55 dB was 77 470.
As regards the railroads, the number of residents who are exposed has increased slightly. The
number of Vantaa residents in the railroad day-evening-night noise level of L den
in excess of 55 dB
is currently 9 280.
The number of those who are now exposed to railroad noise in Vantaa is higher than in the initialstage
report of 2007. The figures are now higher, albeit it that the rolling stock is more silent than
previously. The reason for these higher exposure figures is the new housing areas that have been
built along the tracks and noise areas.
Industrial noise, as defined in the Environmental Noise Directive, is mostly caused by rock crushing
and excavation work, which has mainly taken place in the area between Helsinki Airport and
Ring Road III. This noise, however, does not affect the residential areas. Furthermore, the noise
caused by the Martinlaakso power plant falls below the guideline values in the residential areas.
The aircraft noise that spreads over large areas can be considered as one special characteristic of
Vantaa. According to the noise assessment, as stipulated in the directive and conducted by
Finavia, approximately 14 000 residents in the Helsinki Airport surroundings are exposed to aircraft
noise. Approximately 7 400 of these people are estimated to live in Vantaa.
The number of people who are currently exposed to aircraft noise in Vantaa is more or less on the
same level as in 2002, albeit that the number of passengers travelling through Helsinki Airport
has increased by approximately 40% during this time. This can be attributed, amongst other
things, to the developments in aircraft technology and the increase in seat occupancy rates.
