it from slipping a little at the start (fig 5).
Use the lever to get the right speed for descent; pushing the
lever over halfway the device will slow down descent until it becomes
locked (fig. 6).
It is best to make a safety loop to hold the same working position
for a long time (fig. 7).
Position for lowering materials or persons with brake (fig. 8).
Important: secure the person being lowered with a second
rope, where possible.
Fig. 9 - Parts of ORTIS: A: Fixed side-plate (AL) - B: Mobile sideplate
cam (SS) - F: Pig-tail lever (SS) - G: Safety gate (SS) - H: Locking
latch - I: Protruding pin (SS) - L: “Static rope lanyard” (article
277) - (TX).
AL: Aluminium - SS: Stainless steel - TX: Textile.
Inserting the “Static rope lanyard”/rope:
opening the device: turn the mobile side-plate anti-clockwise
by 180°, lift the rope divider and keep the jamming cam open
with your hand,
insert the “Static rope lanyard” onto the drum, against the fixed
side-plate and with the abseil loop opposite to the jamming cam
(fig. 10),
lower the rope-divider, inserting it into the groove of the drum
(fig. 11)
turn the “Static rope lanyard” for a second time around the
drum (the loose one) clockwise (fig. 12),
release the rope jamming cam, close the mobile side plate
turning it 180° clockwise; check that the locking latch is in place
against the protruding pin, insert the “Static rope lanyard” into the
pig-tail lever in anticlockwise direction (fig. 13).
Clip ORTIS into the anchor point and check that the safety
gate is closed (fig. 14),
How to use it:
for abseiling: slowly lift up the “Static rope lanyard” inserted
into the pig-tail lever with one hand (towards the operator), to
free the jamming cam. Pay out slowly and evenly, using your
hand as a brake (fig. 15),
just let go of the rope to stop abseiling: this activates the jamming
cam (fig. 16).
Important: it is compulsory to use gloves to abseil in safety.
11 - Pre and post use controls
Make sure that the device:
has not suffered from any mechanical deformations,
does not show any signs of cracks or wear,
does not have a worn “Static rope lanyard”/rope,
is suited to the use you want to make of it,
also check that:
the pig-tail lever works freely on the jamming cam,
the safety gate automatically closes when released.
