Arsaniq Students Speak to Astronaut 

aboard International Space Station 

The students of Arsaniq School in Kangiqsujuaq will never forget 

January 31st, 2011. That was the day they had the incredible opportunity 

to speak live to Italian astronaut Paulo Nespoli aboard 

the International Space Station. The event started at 14:26:29 HRS 

local time. 

This space contact was made possible by ARISS, a NASA-sponsored 

educational outreach program for students all over the world. The 

contact was heard worldwide via amateur radio technologies that 

were used to distribute the audio via the Internet Radio Linking 

Project. ARISS team members are volunteers from Education and 

other professional backgrounds, who offer their skills and time to 

ensure that our children stay motivated to learn, and to believe 

that anything is possible. 

The students prepared 20 questions ahead of time to ask the 

astronaut. Ron Ralph, Project Coordinator said, “The space contact 

with Kangiqsujuaq was a success. 17 questions transmitted out 

and 17 were answered. We could have had more questions asked, 

however the astronaut elaborated on some of the answers, and then 

the International Space Station disappeared over the horizon. The 

one thing that floored us was when some of the Kindergarten and 

Grade one students who were watching the launching of the shuttle 

in a video shown before the contact, jumped up and screamed with

mémoire des élèves de l’école Arsaniq à Kangiqsujuaq. C’était là 

le jour où ils ont eu l’occasion incroyable de parler en direct avec 

l’astronaute italien Paulo Nespoli se trouvant à bord de la station 

spatiale internationale. L’événement a commencé à 14:26:29 HRS, 

heure locale. 

Ce contact avec l’espace a pu être réalisé grâce à ARISS, un 

programme d’approche pédagogique parrainé par la NASA au 

profit des élèves et étudiants à travers le monde. Le contact a été 

entendu dans le monde entier par le biais des technologies de radio 

amateur qui ont servi à distribuer le signal audio par l’intermédiaire 

de l’IRLP. Les membres de l’équipe ARISS sont des bénévoles de 

l’éducation et d’autres domaines professionnels, qui offrent leurs 

compétences et leur temps afin de garantir que nos enfants restent 

motivés pour apprendre et croire que tout est possible. 

Les élèves ont préparé à l’avance 20 questions à poser à

The members of the community were invited to watch the 

students make history. 

Principal Linda Leclerc and her staff put a lot of effort into getting 

the students and the school ready for this contact. To the principal’s 

amazement, she received an email from a man in South Australia 

asking where Kangiqsujuaq is on the longitude and latitude scale. 

He said he would be listening to the contact.

du contact.

The first Nunavik School 

Games took place in Kuujjuaraapik 

from April 7 - 13. All 14 Nunavik 

schools and two schools from 

communities located close to 

Kuujjuaraapik - the Cree community 

of Whapmagoostui and 

Sanikiluaq, Nunavut - took part in the event. The Games incorporated 

the former Tundra Trot that had been 

organized for several years. 

250 students from 11 to 16 years of age took part, and two 

coaches from each community were there to support the students 

during the very busy week. The school teams practiced all year to 

prepare for the event. 

The games consisted of the Tundra Trot (cross-country running), 

Basketball, Volleyball, Soccer and Floor Hockey. The activities took 

place the entire day, and the awards for each of the games were 

given out that same night. 

The events were so intense that the kids and coaches were very 

tired at the end of the day. Even though it was hard work, everyone 

still had a smile on their face.

Les premiers Jeux scolaires du Nunavik ont eu lieu à Kuujjuarapik 

du 7 au 13 avril. Toutes les 14 écoles du Nunavik et deux écoles 

des communautés situées à proximité de Kuujjuarapik – la communauté 

Cree de Whapmagoostui et celle de Sanikiluaq, Nunavut 

– ont participé à l’événement. Les Jeux ont incorporé l’ancienne 

Toundra au Trot qui avait été organisée pendant plusieurs années.

Secondary Students in Kuujjuaq Take 

Part in a Hiphop Project with Extra- 

Special Performers 

The ‘Social Work through HipHop’ project took place the week 

of March 7th at Jaanimmarik School in Kuujjuaq. For the very first 

time in Nunavik, ILL-ABILITY performers b-boy Luca “Lazylegz” 

Patuelli and b-boy Tommy “Guns” Ly took part in this special event. 

The ‘Social Work through Hiphop’ program, presented by the 

11-member BluePrintForLife team, consists of an intensive 5-day 

workshop that becomes the secondary school curriculum for the 

entire week. The team uses HipHop as a powerful engagement tool 

to deal with complex issues such as family 

violence, sexual abuse, anger management, 

bullying, substance abuse and suicide. 

The event was extremely well received by 

all the students who participated. They were 

eager to learn the dance moves, and many 

didn’t even stop for breaks! Students were 

very impressed with the way the Ill-ability 

performers could dance despite their physical 

challenges. This showed the students that 

no matter what kind of challenges they face,

by the students at the end of the week. The 

turnout was great, and the excitement in the gym

combats quotidiens. 

La communauté fut invitée à un spectacle donné par les élèves à 

la fin de la semaine. L’assistance était nombreuse et l’enthousiasme 

dans le gymnase était contagieux! Les membres de leurs familles 

furent surpris devant les changements positifs manifestés par 

les élèves, tant dans leur comportement que dans les nouvelles 

habiletés de danse qu’ils avaient apprises. 

« Travail social par le hip-hop », a jusqu’ici eu un impact sur 

environ 3000 jeunes dans plus de 40 projets animés dans des collectivités 

inuites et des Premières Nations. Bien qu’il soit fondé sur 

le hip-hop, ce programme est imprégné de culture traditionnelle

‘Social Work through HipHop’ has presently impacted approximately 

3,000 youth in over 40 projects carried out in Inuit and First 

Nations communities. Although founded on HipHop, the program 

is rooted in traditional culture, and centered around community 

needs. The demand for the program is immense, and the benefit 

is not only heard in the voices of the youth themselves, but from 

elders, teachers, law enforcement agencies, government officials, 

public health and social workers. 

ILL-ABILITIES is a five-member International Breakdance Crew 

with dancers who may be perceived as being physically 

limited in some way. Each dancer has taken those limitations 

and created his own unique style. The purpose of 

this team is to show the world that “anything is possible” 

as long as you keep an open mind, are creative, and can 

adapt yourself to any situation. Their mission is “to shatter 

any misconceptions that society may have about people 

with disabilities”, relaying the message “No Excuses, No 

Limits”. (Ill-ability means “a physical or mental handicap 

that one has adapted themselves to in order to pursue living 

a full, normal life.”)

HipHop Amazes Akulivik

The ‘Social Work through HipHop’ week took place in February 

at Tukisiniarvik School in Akulivik, and was extraordinarily successful. 

Just about all Secondary students participated every day 

in the dance instruction and workshops that discussed personal 

life experiences. The elders had a great time watching the performances, 

and some tried out beatboxing. It was really fun to see the 

elders trying something new; the joy in their faces was priceless! 

The last day of the HipHop week was especially fun for the kids. 

They performed their new dancing skills in a dance battle, called a 

cypher, against their instructors. It was amazing to see the students 

overcome their fear of performing in public. The community was 

delighted with the show. The BluePrintForLife team encouraged those 

in the audience to support the students to continue breakdancing. 

A huge thank you goes out to the staff of Tukisiniarvik School 

who helped with every aspect of the event, including preparing 

meals, cleaning the classrooms used, helping with the banner art, 

and just being there whenever they were needed.

La semaine « Travail social par le hip-hop », a eu lieu au mois de 

février à l’école Tukisiniarvik, à Akulivik, où elle a connu un succès 

extraordinaire. Presque tous les élèves du secondaire ont participé 

tous les jours aux cours de danse et aux ateliers où l’on discutait 

d’expériences personnelles. Les aînés se sont bien amusés à regarder 

les performances des élèves, et certains ont même essayé la 

boîte à rythmes. C’était vraiment amusant de voir les aînés en train 

d’essayer quelque chose de nouveau; la joie qui se lisait sur leurs 

visages n’avait pas de prix! 

La dernière journée de cette semaine hip-hop a été particulièrement 

amusante pour nos jeunes. Ils ont démontré leurs nouvelles 

habiletés de danse dans une bataille de danse, qu’on appelle un 

« cypher », contre leurs instructeurs. C’était merveilleux de voir les 

élèves surmonter leur peur de performer en public. La communauté 

a été charmée par ce spectacle. L’équipe BluePrintForLife a encouragé 

les membres de l’auditoire à motiver les élèves à continuer 

de faire du break dance. 

On doit un très grand merci au personnel de l’école Tukisiniarvik 

qui a contribué à chaque aspect de cet événement, y compris la préparation 

des repas, le nettoyage des classes utilisées, la préparation 

des bannières et le simple fait d’être là quand on avait besoin d’eux.

I went on one of my favourite trips yet with BluePrintForLife 

‘Social Work through HipHop’ at the end of February. We spent a 

week in Inukjuak, Nunavik teaching the youth b-boying & b-girling 

and HipHop culture, as well as facilitating 

social work talks about issues related to 

their lives in the North. We also learned 

a lot about their culture. 

We were a team of 13 dancers from 

Montreal, Toronto, Edmonton and 

Ottawa. This was my tenth project with 

BluePrintForLife, and actually Inukjuak 

was the first community I went to with 

the company back in 2007 when I broke 

a bone in my foot and was wearing a
