Umberto Sansovini – IBM Protecting confidential data in the payment card industry is a sensitive issue. Millions of transactions are made throughout the world everyday. From the companies where the cards are used in the first place, to the banks between which the transactions are made, the confidential data contained in the communication has to be protected. At the occasion of the breakfast organized by ITnews, IBM will present its Internet Security Systems (ISS) solution, to conceive and put into practice a complete security plan. “We receive spams every day on the internet. For example, one gets invited to know more about how to work remotely from home, says Umberto Sansovini, IBM. We call it ‘mules recruiting’. The ones that take the chance to believe the information must then proceed to transfer a few thousands euros from a specified bank to another one.” The examples remain rare because not many are publicly known but the danger is real. Sometimes, it takes years before these thefts are discovered and the illegal transactions are stopped. “‘Who must refund the clients?’ That is the question that everyone asks by then. But the reissuing of a credit card costs between 10 and 15 euros. In the case of a massive theft, the cost is huge, because of both the refunding and the loss of credibility to the customers.” COMMON FOUNDATIONS the encryption of data is paramount for both transfer and storage. PCI is not about finding holes in organizations’ security systems. It is about helping them to collaborate on the international level to prevent ‘organized cybercrime’. “PCI must not be seen as one more standard in the industry, Sansovini said. It is true that the banking sector is wired with compliance rules. But the PCI standards are the foundations to create the best security plan for the company.” In Europe, the PCI customers’ strive for compliance is much unequal across the continent and from one sector to the next. “The transactions between shops and banks should be highly secured, Sansovini said. Risk management is high on the agenda for the latter. Shops have thus to prove to banks that they are compliant with PCI.” Umberto Sansovini, IBM Internet Security Systems, General Business Sales, GTS, SouthWest Europe In 2006, in order to prevent data or identity theft, five of the most well-known credit card companies put their competitive differences aside to create the standards of the Payment Card Industry and the PCI Council. This list of 12 compliance rules for the enterprises and the banking institutions helps insure a correct protection of the data. The list starts with the optimal management of the firewall, Sansovini said. Ninety-nine percent of PCI customers have put it into place and think that Security stops there, when it is only the first step.” Indeed, the list also underlines that PROOF OF COMPLIANCE IBM Internet Security Systems has developed a thorough experience in security. IBM ISS can therefore certify a company is compliant, or not, with PCI as requested by the PCI Council and Banks. “Some shops may think that their needs are not as important because their transfer system is protected by Cetrel, for example, Sansovini said. Nevertheless, the data is still stored locally, which induces risks. IBM ISS can check the way a company follows the 12 rules of PCI.” 58 octobre 08
