INT794 - Ackerman, Marcel from Oral History of Europe in Space collection Date of birth 28/11/1931 Place of birth Libramont Nationality BE Le baron Ackerman est d'abord boursier FNRS au laboratoire de Paul Goldfinger à l'Université libre de Bruxelles: il y étudie les vitesses de réactions photochimiques en phase gazeuse et les énergies de dissociation de molécules asymétriques par spectrométrie de masse à hautes températures. Il obtient son doctorat en 1960. A la Brown University aux Etats-Unis, en 1961-1962, il s'intéresse aux réactions chimiques en rayons moléculaires croisés. Rentré en Belgique, il travaille de 1963 à 1996 au Centre national de recherche de l'espace puis à l'Institut d'aéronomie spatiale fondés par Marcel Nicolet: il est assistant, chef de département puis directeur. Il s'y dédie à l'observation de l'atmosphère de 10 à 100 km d'altitude dans l'infra-rouge et le visible au limbe terrestre par ballons, à bord de Concorde et de Spacelab; à la détermination du rayonnement solaire par ballon dans la fenêtre atmosphérique de 200 nm (origine de l'ozone) et par fusées Skylark de l'ESRO dans l'ultraviolet lointain; à la mesure des bandes de Schumann-Runge de l'oxygène par les raies d'émission du silicium et au laboratoire de G. Herzberg à Ottawa. Il contribue à la mise en évidence de l'importance de la prédissociation en aéronomie. Name of interviewer D.
