Graduated from Paris <strong>University</strong> in Physics and Astronomy, I961; Doctor in Physics of Paris <strong>University</strong> (Sorbonne), 1968; Director of<br />

Laboratoire de Physique Stellaire et Planétaire of CNRS, 1969-1983; Chairman of ESA’s Science Advisory Committee (SAC), 1977-1979;<br />

Director of ESA Science Programme, 1983-2001. In these duties, he established the first long term programme 'Horizon 2000'. He was<br />

also entrusted with defining the <strong>European</strong> strategy for Earth Sciences and Observation, now called the 'Living Planet' programme.<br />

Between 2001 and 2006, he served as an advisor on the 'Aurora' programme of planetary exploration; Joint Director General of CNES for<br />

Science, 2002-2003. In these functions, he chaired a Commission on the future of the French space policy. The Commission’s report led<br />

to a major reorganisation of the CNES; Executive Director of the International Space Science <strong>Institute</strong> (ISSI) in Bern (Switzerland),<br />

January 2003-; President of COSPAR (Committee for Space Research), October 2002-; Professor at the <strong>University</strong> of Liège, Belgium,<br />

November 2002-. Prof. Bonnet is the author of more than 150 articles and scientific publications and a number of books including “Les<br />

Horizons Chimériques” (1992), “International Cooperation in Space” together with V. Manno (1994) and “Surviving 1000 Centuries. Can<br />

we do it?" together with L. Woltjer (2008). Awards and distinctions: Officier de la Légion d’Honneur, médaille d'Argent du CNES (1976),<br />

prix Deslandres de l'Académie des Sciences (1980), Gagarine (1985) and Tsiolkovsky (1993) Medals by The Russian Federation of<br />

Cosmonautics, Laurel Aviation Week and Space Technology (1985), Emil Award (1987) and 'Basic scientist' (1993) by the International<br />

Academy of Astronautics (1987), 'personnalité de l'année dans les Sciences en France' (1987), Grand Prix of Association Aéronautique et<br />

Astronautique de France (1996), Doctor Honoris Causa of the <strong>University</strong> of London (Imperial College) (1997), COSPAR Award (2000),<br />

NASA Public Service Medal (2001), etc.<br />
