ABSTRACT
This present study has for purpose to analyse the market and the system of
commercialisation of the local breed chicken in the Dakar department
(Senegal). The adopted methodological approach consisted first of all in
bibliographical search through a collection of all the information’s available in
the field of study. After, an investigation was realized next to 34 traders in 14
markets and points of sale in the Dakar department.
The study reveals a lack of trader’s organization into the market. The traders
are for the majority old persons of the Wolof ethnic group, most of them
originary from Louga. The main motivation to the exercise of the activity is to
fight against unemployment. Others traders, 26.5%, found themselves in the
activity having inherited it from one’s parent. It is also noticed a differential of
very high prices, that is to say 820 FCFA, between prices applicated by the
traders in the Dakar department and proposed prices in region in the weekly
markets. An average of a clear profit of 505 FCFA was estimated in each
chicken sold.
Al in all, the family poultry production, important mean of fight against poverty
and of reinforcement of the food security is a profitable financially. The family
poultry production must therefore be supported in the perspective of a
sustainable development. This support will be all the more effective since the
government develops programs in favour of his promotion and of the
marketing of his products.
