The first edition of the Wall Art Fair will take place in the city of Lyon ; the same
city that had already seen the creation of the Docks Art Fair, and its subsequent
development in which it has become a major biennial cultural event.
Despite the strong desire to hold the DAF on a yearly basis, thanks to its evergrowing
success, it has finally made way for the WAF, as the Docks alternates
so well with the Biennial of Contemporary Art. There was no shortage of energy
for this new challenge of an unusual nature : a “fair-event-exhibition” all rolled
into one, with the rather crazy constraint of a having just a single wall per
exhibitor. The principal objective of the WAF is to favorably reduce the
participation costs of the exhibitors, so they do not constitute a barrier to the
discovery of new talents in contemporary art. However, the goal is also to break
the traditional static mould of exhibitions and create the energy that animates
artists, gallery owners, and collectors, which is even more palpable here in Lyon
Rhône-Alpes, a city which boasts second place in the market of French
Contemporary Art. At La Sucrière, a highly established ‘place’of contemporary
art, each of the walls dedicated for each project, (with some, and we thank the
artists and gallery owners concerned, having been made especially for the WAF),
will resonate in a particular way, in a explosive and surprising dialogue whose
works will be either a link or a counterpoint. Wall Art Fair is also No Wall,
a space in a space for large projects requiring no walls.
Lyon has today a new powerful event in contemporary art whose destiny
is to cross national boundaries, returning regularly to the city, and alternating
with the Docks Art Fair. We would sincerely like to thank all the gallery owners
who have believed in this project and whose enthusiasm and participation have
effectively supported the development of contemporary art in the region.
We would like to give even more special thanks to the CIC group as without
their support, the WAF would simply not exist.

C’est à Lyon que la première édition de Wall Art Fair voit le jour, à Lyon
qui a déjà vu DocksArtFair naître et grandir jusqu’à devenir un évènement
majeur de la rentrée culturelle tous les deux ans.
L’envie de rendre DAF annuel était forte devant le succès plus important
rencontré à chaque édition, pour finalement laisser la place à WAF, parce
que Docks cohabite vraiment bien avec la Biennale d’Art Contemporain.
L’énergie ne manquait pas pour un nouveau challenge au contexte improbable,
une foire-évènement- exposition aux contraintes folles d’un mur unique pour
chaque exposant. Ceci d’abord, faut-il le répéter afin de réduire
avantageusement les coûts de participation des exposants, pour qu’ils ne
soient pas un frein à la volonté de faire découvrir les nouveaux talents de l’art
contemporain, mais aussi pour casser le moule statique des salons et rendre
l’énergie qui anime artistes, galeristes, collectionneurs encore plus palpable ici
à Lyon, en Rhône-Alpes, deuxième place du marché de l’art contemporain
en France. Dans la Sucrière, haut lieu de l’art contemporain s’il en est, chacun
des murs investi par chaque projet, dont certains, et nous en remercions les
artistes et les galeristes, ont été réalisés spécialement pour WAF, va résonner
d’une manière particulière, dans un dialogue détonnant et étonnant dont les
œuvres seront le lien ou le contrepoint. Wall Art Fair c’est aussi No Wall,
espace dans l’espace pour des projets volumineux ne nécessitant pas de murs.
Lyon se voit ainsi dotée d’un nouvel évènement fort pour l’art contemporain
dont la destinée doit dépasser les frontières nationales pour y revenir
régulièrement en alternance avec Docks Art Fair. Nous remercions
chaleureusement tous les galeristes qui ont cru en ce projet avec
enthousiasme et qui par leur participation soutiennent efficacement la vie
de l’art contemporain en région. Nos remerciements plus particuliers
au Groupe CIC sans qui WAF n’existerait pas.
