Mélanie Benoit Coordonnatrice, Suivi et contrôle et gestion des sols — Mine Canadian Malartic Soil monitoring, Control and Management Coordinator — Canadian Malartic Mine Osisko croit fermement à l’importance de traiter la terre avec respect. Mélanie Benoit est l’une des personnes chargées de concrétiser cet engagement. Son poste de Coordonnatrice, suivi et contrôle et gestion des sols, lui convient à merveille. Il lui permet de concilier deux de ses intérêts fondamentaux : l’essor du secteur minier et la conservation environnementale. Mélanie a eu l’occasion, au cours de sa carrière, de travailler à plusieurs mines dont Bousquet, Louvicourt, Sigma, Myra- Falls en plus de mettre ses talents au service du Bureau de l’exploration géologique du Québec. Ainsi, elle est attirée par le programme de géologie du CEGEP de Rouyn-Noranda. En parallèle, sa conscience écologique, déjà bien éveillée, s’aiguise davantage. Elle ira chercher un certificat en sciences de l’environnement à l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. Elle conclut alors que la meilleure façon de protéger l’environnement est de participer aux efforts déployés par les acteurs de l’industrie. Elle veut faire partie de la solution. Son souhait est exaucé lorsqu’elle entre au service d’Osisko, en 2010, en tant que technicienne en environnement. « À cette période, tout était à construire et à imaginer au projet Canadian Malartic, indique Mélanie. C’était très exaltant d’être aux premières loges de la création d’une nouvelle mine. » Elle met tout son cœur dans cet ambitieux projet, qui relance l’économie de la région tout en insufflant un vent de changement, notamment sur le plan environnemental. Une influence qui se fait sentir bien au-delà des sites de l’entreprise. « Je suis très fière de notre expertise minière, ici au Québec, et particulièrement en Abitibi », affirme-telle. « Notre savoir-faire et notre respect de l’environnement sont bien tangibles et reconnus mondialement. » «J’ai débuté ma carrière à une époque où des femmes avaient tracé la voie avant moi. Ces femmes extraordinaires ont su passer outre les difficultés et affronter les réticences et tabous à cette époque. » “I began my career at a time when the women before me had already paved the way. Those incredible women faced challenges, reluctance and the taboos of their time.” Osisko strongly believes in the importance of treating Mother Earth with respect. Mélanie Benoit is one of the individuals who enables the Company to make good on this commitment. Her position as coordinator of soil monitoring, control and management suits her well. It allows her to contribute to two aspects she considers important: the development of the mining sector, and environmental conservation. During her years in the mining sector, Mélanie has had the opportunity to work at several mines, namely Bousquet, Louvicourt, Sigma, Myra-Falls, as well as the exploration geology branch of the Québec government. Mélanie’s experiences prompted her to enroll in the geology program at the college in Rouyn- Noranda. Soon yearning to further develop her ecological perspective and deepen her knowledge, she went on to earn a Certificate in Environmental Sciences at the Université du Québec, in Trois- Rivières. She firmly believed the best way to protect the environment is to be part of the solution by contributing to the efforts made by industry players. Her wish was granted when Osisko offered her a job in 2010 as Environmental Technician. “At that time, everything at the Canadian Malartic project was about coming up with ideas and building them”, says Mélanie. “It was very exciting to be at the forefront of the creation of a new mine”. She still remains dedicated to this ambitious project, which has brought with it a wind of change, reviving the economy and improving the environment; an impact that is felt well beyond the region’s mine site. “I am very proud of our mining expertise here in Québec, particularly in the Abitibi”, she says. “Our expertise and our respect for the environment are tangible and recognized worldwide“. 8
Suzanne Blais Surintendante, Santé et sécurité — Mine Canadian Malartic Health and Safety Superintendant — Canadian Malartic Mine Depuis toujours, Suzanne Blais ouvre des portes pour les femmes. En 1983, elle débute sa carrière dans l’industrie minière au département des ressources humaines pour le Groupe Noranda, fonderie Horne. Par la suite, ses connaissances en gestion de la main-d’oeuvre, relations de travail, formation ainsi que santé et sécurité l’amènent à l’usine Yvan Vézina et la mine Mouska. Tout au long de sa carrière, Suzanne crée des précédents. À ses débuts aux ressources humaines, elle devient la première femme à occuper un poste de gestion dans son entreprise et l’une des seules à travailler dans le secteur minier. Elle est aussi une des premières femmes à évoluer dans le domaine de la santé-sécurité. Suzanne ose aussi s’aventurer dans l’inconnu. En 2010, elle se lance tête première dans la création d’une société minière d’envergure, en l’occurrence Osisko. Elle participe à l’élaboration de plusieurs de ses politiques de ressources humaines et à la mise sur pied du Comité Bonne Entente, qui facilite les échanges entre la direction et les employés. Ayant fait ses preuves, on lui confie rapidement le dossier de santé et sécurité de la plus grande mine d’or à ciel ouvert au Canada — elle relève le défi avec des résultats qui ne font que s’améliorer. Toutes ces expériences ont renforcé son sentiment d’appartenance à l’entreprise et renforcé son désir de contribuer à son développement. Suzanne éprouve une grande satisfaction d’avoir pu défricher le terrain au profit de la génération montante de professionnelles. Elle estime d’ailleurs que l’industrie minière a tout à gagner à accueillir plus de femmes dans ses rangs. «Les femmes sont très réfléchies, minutieuses et centrées sur l’aspect humain. Je crois que leur présence accrue permettra de réorienter nos approches et d’améliorer les pratiques sur le terrain. » “Women are very thoughtful and meticulous and are mindful of the human aspect. I believe that their increased presence will redirect our approaches in order to improve practices within the sector.” Since the beginning of her career, Suzanne Blais has opened doors for women. In 1983, she started her career in the mining industry in the human resources department for the Horne smelter, working for Noranda. Her years of experience in labor management, labor relations, training and occupational health and safety then lead her to the Yvan Vézina mill and the Mouska mine. Throughout her career, Suzanne has set precedents. Early on in her career, she became the first woman to hold a management position within her company’s human resources department and one of the few working in the mining sector. She is also one of the first women to advance professionally within the field of health and safety. Suzanne also dares to venture into the unknown. In 2010, she jumped at the chance to be part of the Osisko team as it was transforming into a remarkable mining company. She was involved in the development of several of its human resources policies and the creation of the Harmony Committee, which facilitates exchanges between management and employees. Having proved her talent, Osisko quickly assigned Suzanne to the Health and Safety department of the largest open pit gold mine in Canada. Not only did she accept the responsibility but she rose to the challenge by improving the company’s health & safety statistics quarter after quarter. All of these experiences have strengthened her sense of belonging and her desire to contribute to Osisko’s continued development. Suzanne is happy to have paved the way for future generations of professionals. She believes that the mining industry has everything to gain by including more women within its ranks. “Women are very thoughtful and meticulous and are mindful of the human aspect. I believe their increased presence will redirect our approach and improve practices within the sector“. 9
