Forapplications where extreme ambient temperatures,high speeds or high loads are expected, a variety ofspeciality lubricants and adjustments are available. Hightemperature greases available include Mobil HTS #2 andMobilith SHC460. Please refer to Table 5 for a definition ofoperating conditions of DODGE Tapered Roller Bearings.Other special lubricants are available upon request.Special lubricant options usually involve set-up chargesand premiums. To order, specify type of lubricant requiredat the end of the product name or after the standard partnumber.’Example: F4B-E-207 except with Mobil HTS #2grease and 0.12 to 0.15 lateral end playor.023106 except with Mobil HTS #2grease and 0.12 to 0.15 lateral end playHigh Speed Operation - In the higher speed ranges,too much grease will cause overheating. The amount ofgrease the bearing will take for a particular high speedapplication can be determined only by experience. Ifexcess grease in the bearing causes overheating, it willbe necessary to remove the grease fitting (and drain plugwhen furnished) to permit excess grease to escape. Whenestablishing a relubrication schedule, note that a smallamount of grease at frequent intervals is preferable to alarge amount of grease at infrequent intervals.Operation in Presence of Dust, Water orCorrosive Vapors - Under these conditions the bearingshould contain as much grease as speed will permit, sincea full bearing with consequent slight leakage is the bestprotection against entrance of foreign material. In the lowerspeed ranges, it is advisable to add extra grease to a newbearing before putting into operation. Bearings should begreased as often as necessary (daily if required) to maintaina slight leakage at the seals.INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCEIn nearly all applications, good <strong>des</strong>ign practice requirestwo bearings supporting the shaft. In cases where three ormore bearings are installed, unless precautions are takento line the bearings up, both vertically and horizontally, it ispossible to induce heavy loads. To ensure good alignment,mounting surfaces must be checked for flatness and mustlie in the same plane. When tightening base bolts andcap bolts, each bolt should be alternately tightened inincremental torque values until full torque is achieved toprevent the angular shifting of the pillow block that occurswhen one bolt is tightened to its full torque.
