While we areawaiting the government to learn, reflect and accountfor the mishap, the incident has aroused a diplomaticcrisis between Australia and China.China’s Foreign Ministry’s spokesman ZhaoLijian’s tweeting of a fabricated image to accuseAustralian soldiers has agitated PM Morrisondemanding an apology to which China’s ForeignMinistry spokeswoman Hua Chunying refused. The Australian government indeed is courageousand responsible enough to uncover this militarymistake, this act is righteous rather than shameful.Australia is taking this lead amongst the multinationaltroop in Afghanistan. This is a government ofgood accountability.A foreign ministry spokesman’s sayingrepresents the country. The use of fake image insupport of opinions is not appropriate, let alone formocking Australian army representing Australia.Hence Morrison’s demand is supported by theAustralian society as well as the Opposition.Australia-China relation is a tense one at themoment. China is using every economical tacticon Australia to show her dissatisfaction, includingtariff on wines, blockage on imported commodities, scaring away of Chinese overseas students etc. WithChinese army’s track record in supressing the publicand ethnic minorities, the mocking of Australiantroop’s behaviour cannot be convincing. If Australiangovernment is to come clean with this guilt, it onlymakes the Chinese government looks hypocritic tothe world. Why look at the speck of sawdust in yourbrother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank inyour own eye?But Morrison’s high-profile response just tells heis short of anything amid Australian over dependence. At the end it is just a gesture of objection. But Australian Chinese need to be mindful. Moreprovocative acts from China could easily trigger anti-Chinese sentiment in our society not in line with theusual multi-culturalism harmony here. China’s insulton Australia will make Australian Chinese vulnerableto become scapegoat to be targeted. 6-10 15-18 24-26 22-23 DisclaimersThe views and opinions of authors expressed inSameway Magazine do not necessarily state orreflect those of the publisher.
