The killing of Afghanistan civilians by Australian
troops has alarmed many Australians. While we are
awaiting the government to learn, reflect and account
for the mishap, the incident has aroused a diplomatic
crisis between Australia and China.
China’s Foreign Ministry’s spokesman Zhao
Lijian’s tweeting of a fabricated image to accuse
Australian soldiers has agitated PM Morrison
demanding an apology to which China’s Foreign
Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying refused.
The Australian government indeed is courageous
and responsible enough to uncover this military
mistake, this act is righteous rather than shameful.
Australia is taking this lead amongst the multinational
troop in Afghanistan. This is a government of
good accountability.
A foreign ministry spokesman’s saying
represents the country. The use of fake image in
support of opinions is not appropriate, let alone for
mocking Australian army representing Australia.
Hence Morrison’s demand is supported by the
Australian society as well as the Opposition.
Australia-China relation is a tense one at the
moment. China is using every economical tactic
on Australia to show her dissatisfaction, including
tariff on wines, blockage on imported commodities,
scaring away of Chinese overseas students etc. With
Chinese army’s track record in supressing the public
and ethnic minorities, the mocking of Australian
troop’s behaviour cannot be convincing. If Australian
government is to come clean with this guilt, it only
makes the Chinese government looks hypocritic to
the world. Why look at the speck of sawdust in your
brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in
your own eye?
But Morrison’s high-profile response just tells he
is short of anything amid Australian over dependence.
At the end it is just a gesture of objection.
But Australian Chinese need to be mindful. More
provocative acts from China could easily trigger anti-
Chinese sentiment in our society not in line with the
usual multi-culturalism harmony here. China’s insult
on Australia will make Australian Chinese vulnerable
to become scapegoat to be targeted.

The BMW X4 is a car that divides
opinion — don't like or madly in love, but one
thing everyone can agree is that this X4 looks
absolutely beastly, striking, huge, massive
with length 4,671 mm, width 1,881, height
1,624, and 2,810 wheelbase, bringing about a
total of 1,735 kg of unladen weight.
One of the things that BMW buyers
love about their brand is its heritage, and
signature BMW brand elements like the
Hofmeister kink of course, that signature
kidney grille. On the X4, the grille has a threedimensional
look, seeming even larger than
before. Together with its contoured and bright
LED headlight units, the car is an imposing
sight as it comes into the rear-view mirror.
Styling-wise, the X4 is like a hybrid of
coupe and SUV, which BMW call a Sports
Activity Coupe (SAC). The car looks muscular,
its distinct shoulder line running from door
handles down to tail-lights. Sculpted bulges
really give the car presence and character.
Twin exhaust pipes complete that sporty look
and make the SAC look… well, stunning.
The X4 xDrive20i produces 135kW
power and 270Nm torque from its 2.0-litre
turbo, completing 0-100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.
On the highway, the car is a real pleasure to
drive. We reached speeds close to its max,
and the car felt comfortable and sure-footed
at all times. Whenever I wanted to overtake, it
always felt like there was enough power to call
upon when needed.
This X4 weighs about 50 kilograms less
than its predecessor, thanks to intelligent
use of weight-saving materials, not just the
chassis, but in construction and various other
components, using more aluminium as well
as high-strength and ultra-high-strength
grades of steel, resulting in improved body

structure,rigidity and consequently,agility
and occupantprotection.
Aerodynam ic drag is reduced around 10
per cent than ks to a more stream lined body
as wellas additionalm easures like active
air flap control,fron t apron Air Curtains
and additionalunderbody cladding.A bit
technicalto discuss how this drag reduction
works,but key takeaw ay is th is all-n ew
BM W X4 sets a new segm ent benchm ark
with drag coefficient of 0.30.W hy is th at
im portant? Less drag m eans more speed,
low er consum ption.
On the highw ay it's com forting to know
th e car com es with an SO S button in case
of accidents.The In telligen t Em ergency
Callfeature can be triggered m anually or
autom atically ifan airbag is deployed,via an
accident-prooftelephone unit.
As expected ofany prem ium m arque,the
X4 interior exudes quality and refinem ent.
Overallfinishing looks stylish and logos
strategically placed with in th e cabin add
a touch of class. Am bient ligh t can be
custom ised with six colour options in 11
com binations.
Electrically adjustable seats,com fortable
and providing good support,really enhance
th e look and feelof th e car.I also like th e
raised seating position with a good view
ahead for safety when travelling atspeed.
The cabin is generally well-insulated,
and road noise only starts creeping in
when travellin g at th e higher end of th e
speedom eter.In any case,the sound system
is more th an com petent,and we enjoyed
being able to connectwirelessly to my iPhone,
playing Spotify songs seam lessly,and even
better wirelessly charging m y iPhone at the
sam e tim e!

and services available th rou gh its 10.25”
touchscreen such as Navigation System
Professionaland BM W ConnectedD rive
Services like Concierge service and RealTim e
Traffic Inform ation,and reverse cam .
There is plenty ofspace,with 525 litres
boot capacity,expanding nearly three times
to 1,430 with rear backrests folded,and 27
millim etres more legroom com pared to the
previous model.
The car may look huge and ungainly,
but it handles well,very well,sure-footed
and agile than ks to a winning com bination
ofxD rive intelligentall-w heeldrive,M Sport
suspension and perfectly balanced 50:50
weight distribution betw een fron t and rear
axle.Cornering atspeed or executing fastlane
changes the car always feels well-planted,yet
with com fortable suspension.
I enjoyed p u ttin g th e car in to Sport
mode when I needed more pow er.A Driving
Experience Controlsw itch chooses from three
driving m odes:SPO RT,COM FORT and ECO
PRO .In Com fortperform ance is already very
good butSportcould be called Beastm ode.
I like how th e dials change,sw itch ing
betw een m odes. In Com fort, you have
standard dials.With Eco Pro the dials take on
a coolbluish colour.Ofcourse Sportm ode is
my favourite!
During m y time with th e X4,I fou n d
the car’s variable sport steering and speedsensitive
Servotronic pow er assistance always
made steering feel‘justright’— wellweighted
at higher speeds and appropriately light at
low speeds such as parallelparking.
I know a lotofpeople never use paddleshifters
but I really enjoyed using th e X4's
while cruising.W henever needing m ore
pow er the paddle-shifters can drop a gear or
two,putting revs into optim alpow er range.
X4 gear changes are sm ooth th an ks to
th e well-spaced gear ratios of th e 8-speed
gearbox. Fuel econom y is rated at 7.3
litres/100km salth ou gh I was not able to
verify th is as I was driving m ostly on th e
highw ay.
Our test X4 20iis priced at $82,900
plus ORC and is really a statem ent car.
With distinctive atten tion-grabbing looks,
prem ium finishing and strong perform ance,
th e new X4 is for th ose who want th e finer
things in life and can enjoy the sheer driving
pleasure on offer.
BM W is offering tw o service-inclusive
packages,a five-year/80,000km Basic level
for $3685,or the Plus,for $8173.
