Living costs
It is impossible to give a general profile for British universities
when it comes to living costs. One thing to note though is
that living costs in the Southeast tend to be higher than in the
western and northern parts of the UK. London is in a league
of its own and is certainly one of the most (if not the most)
expensive cities in Europe. Living costs vary greatly across the
country, so that every student budget can be caters for. The
myth that studying in Britain is generally ridiculously expensive
has certainly no firm grounding.
Accommodation
Universities in the United Kingdom generally guarantee their
first-year students accommodation in university halls, provided
that you meet the deadlines, which are different at every
university. The majority of first-year students live in Halls of
Residence where they adapt very easily to university life.
The Society of Luxembourg Students in Britain (SLSB)
The Society of Luxembourg Students in Britain was set up in
1992 by a group of Luxembourgers who thought it was about
time to promote university education in the UK and Ireland.
The SLSB has two aims: inform prospective students on the
one hand and organize social events in Luxembourg and in
the UK on the other. As far as student information is concerned,
the society participates at the information session
organized annually by the British Embassy, the British Council
and CEDIES. Furthermore, we participate at the ‘Foire de
l’Étudiant’ organized annually in November. As far as our social
activities are concerned, the SLSB organizes social events
both in Luxembourg as well as in Britain ranging from barbe-
cue parties, dinners, cultural visits, etc. We also participate at
events organized by ACEL and LASEL like the “Studentebal” in
August and the “Tournoi de Noël”. Our main events are our
annual UK convention and the notorious “Britbal”
held in Luxembourg on 27 December. Past conventions were
held in Bristol/Bath, Lancaster, Dublin, Liverpool and Glasgow.
In the last three years the SLSB has also held three “European
Weekends” in London, Glasgow and Dublin, welcoming Luxembourg
students from all over Europe. In order to keep in
touch, we run an email list to our members up-to-date as far
as our events are concerned and also to pass on information

Undergraduate deadlines
January 15, except for Oxford, Cambridge, and medicinerelated
degrees: October 15.
Postgraduate deadlines
Generally there are none, but it is advisable to check with the
university.
