THE CRITERIA FOR CATALOGUING AND DOCUMENTATION
In 2010, on the basis of criteria that were identified by the promoters of the project, those
sites of public or private property featuring elements of interest and considered worthy of
being investigated by a process of cataloguing were selected. It was decided to take under
consideration all those parks and gardens that offered several shared characteristics
which could be summarised thusly:
– presenting ordered and intentional blueprints, formed by plant elements (grass,
hedges, woods, etc.) and artificial elements (statues, fountains, fish-ponds,
architectural edifices, etc.) that could be traced to a plan still identifiable in the current
form or traceable on the basis of existing scientific and historical documentation;
– containing prestigious botanical specimens (arboreal, floral, shrub), or else are
botanical gardens;
– playing (or played) an important role in the urban fabric and the landscape context
in which they are located;
– boasting origins dating back at least 50 years (criteria in line with current national
legislation in the field of cultural heritage).
THE PROJECT: DATES AND IMAGES ON-LINE
The project, completed at the end of 2012, rendered possible the cataloguing of 178
parks and gardens judged to be particularly significant out of the more than 352 in the
census. Some 97 historic areas have been documented in the province of Udine, 29 in
Pordenone, 28 in Gorizia and 24 in Trieste. To each of these has been dedicated
catalogue documentation that is made up of a section in which each site is described
briefly in its formal characteristics, with data regarding the plants, physiognomy, the
historical-critical news, the designers, the contractors and with an historical sequence of
the interventions that determined its transformation. To these salient elements a list of
important botanical specimens and their location has been added, as well as the
decorations (statutes, fountains and edifices) in each single park or garden. The catalogue
sheet is accompanied by photographs that permit the easy visualisation of each site. One
of the novelties adopted in the project is the chart apparatus attached to the archive,
which is made up of extracts from the Regional Technical Chart and Orthophotos: through
geo-referencing the unique georeferencing of the sight on the territory has been made
possible. The implementation methods of the project have underlined the importance of
direct investigation to collect data, historical reconstruction and the transversal reading
of the garden, and keeping in mind each of its components: botanical, architectonic,
historical-artistic, spatial-planning layout. In the context of sharing knowledge over the
internet, the sheets were inserted in the SIRPAC regional data base dedicated to the
cultural heritage (Regional IT System of Cultural Heritage – www.sirpac-fvg.org). The
sheets, which may be consulted by the public, are companied by news regarding the
project, extracts of special research and a topical bibliography.
The positive conclusion of the project has permitted the centre to recover the threads of
preceding research experience and has permitted contact with experts and researchers
in the area, whose field of interest was only waiting to be supported by new initiatives
able to bring progress to our knowledge. The elaboration of this cataloguing, accompanied
by the perfecting of appropriate restoration methods, reclamation and protection, has
made it possible to acquire greater knowledge of how the defence of this heritage will
have infinite effects and great value: historical, cultural, landscape, environmental and
botanical.
