The values of the people of Umbria
Sotto la spinta di tremendi fatti di cronaca nera,
giornali e tribune televisive non si sono risparmiate,
in questi ultimi tempi, di dipingere Perugia
a tinte truculente, con un preoccupante “ritorno
d’immagine” per il capoluogo e, per forza di cose,
per l’Umbria intera. L’assurda tragedia di Meredith
Kercher, la studentessa inglese assassinata a Perugia,
è servita a pretesto per dipingere il fosco quadro di
una città degradata.
Come è stato sottolineato da più parti, e a dispetto
di chi, per calcolo miope, è sembrato voler accentuare
i toni catastrofi ci sul disgregamento del
tessuto sociale, noi non ci riconosciamo in questa
descrizione. Questo non signifi ca negare i problemi,
anche gravi, che vanno affrontati e risolti: signifi ca
invece riaffermare la nostra fi ducia incrollabile nella
gente umbra, nella sua civiltà, nella sua voglia e
capacità di mantenere e sviluppare un tessuto sociale
e civile, costruito nella sua storia e che è sano nelle
sue fondamenta.
I valori sani della gente umbra, delle sue tradizioni
culturali, che si coniugano con la modernità, l’innovazione
nell’impresa e nel lavoro, sono quegli stessi che
ispirano il “Natale in Umbria” e le molte iniziative per
celebrarlo. Le salutiamo come una prova della capacità
di stare insieme nella tradizione, di una comunità unita
nei suoi valori semplici e popolari.
Il bisogno di Natale
The need for Christmas
Viene il Natale, e quest’anno sembra di desiderarlo
di più, come nell’infanzia. Le Feste di
Natale, i presepi, le stelle, le veglie, il cibo e
i dolci, e il piccolo mondo antico in cui tutto questo
si svolge, soprattutto in Umbria che per il Natale,
come mostra questo tradizionale numero speciale di
“UmbriaRegione”, rappresenta un fondale naturale,
con il suo paesaggio e le atmosfere dei suoi centri
intrise di passato. Mai come quest’anno il Natale ci
viene in aiuto con la forza e il rigore della tradizione,
come la promessa di un mondo concorde, che si fondi
sull’identità nella diversità, come l’utopia di una
armonica convivenza civile, a cui spesso le cronache
ci hanno disabituato.
Benvenga dunque il Natale, benvengano i suoi appuntamenti
da gustare con semplicità, senza eccessi,
nella coscienza della cultura, della storia e delle
tradizioni.
Nel Natale umbro, nelle feste umbre radicate al borgo
e alla terra, c’è forse l’Umbria più vera.

Spurred by a terrible recent crime, newspaper and
television journalists have not spared themselves
in portraying Perugia in bleak colours, tarnishing
not only the image of Perugia, the Region’s capital,
but also the image of the whole of Umbria itself. The
absurd tragedy of the death of Meredith Kercher, the
young English student who was murdered in Perugia,
has served as a pretext for painting a grim image of
a degraded city.
As many have stressed, and to the annoyance of those who,
for reasons of short-sighted self-interest, seem to want to
accentuate the catastrophic colours they use to depict the
disintegration of the social fabric, we do not recognise
ourselves in this description. This does not mean that we
deny the existence of problems, some of them serious, that
need to be dealt with and resolved: instead, it means that
we reaffi rm our unshaken belief in the people of Umbria,
in their culture, in their wish and ability to maintain and
develop a social and civil fabric, built up over years of
history and standing sound on its foundations.
The sound values and cultural traditions of the people
of Umbria, which combine so well with modernity, with
innovation in industry and in the world of work, are
the same ones which inspire this magazine, “Natale
in Umbria”, and the many events in Umbria that celebrate
Christmas. We welcome these as proof of how
people can be united by tradition, and by a community
that shares simple, common values.

Christmas is coming, and this year it seems that
we desire it even more, the way we did when
we were children: the Christmas festivities,
the Christmas cribs, stars, vigils, food and sweets,
and the small, ancient world that it all takes place in,
particularly in Umbria, a region which, as this special
edition of “UmbriaRegione” magazine shows, forms a
perfect setting for Christmas, with its landscape and
the atmosphere of its small towns and villages that are
steeped in the past. More than ever, Christmas helps
us this year with the strength and rigour of tradition,
with its promise of a world of harmony, based on respect
for diversity, which our daily diet of news often
makes us forget.
Let’s therefore welcome Christmas, welcome its many
events and enjoy them with simplicity, without excess,
and with an awareness of the culture, history and traditions
behind them. It is in the Umbrian Christmas, in the
festivities that are rooted in its villages and in the land,
that you will perhaps fi nd the real Umbria.
