Tu se’ colei che l’umana natura<br />

Nobilitasti si, che’l suo Fattore<br />

Non disdegnò di farsi sua fattura.<br />

Nel ventre tuo si raccese l’amore,<br />

Per lo cui caldo nell’eterna pace<br />

Così è germinato questo fiore.<br />

Qui se’ a noi meridiana face<br />

Di caritate, e giuso, intra i mortali,<br />

Se’ di speranza fontana vivace.<br />

Donna, se’ tanto grande, e tanto vali,<br />

Che qual vuol grazia, ed a te non ricorre,<br />

Sua disianza vuol volar senz’ali.<br />

La tua benignità non pur soccorre<br />

A chi dimanda, ma molte fiate<br />

Liberamente al dimandar precorre.<br />

3. The Beatific Vision (St Bernard’s Prayer)<br />

Virgin Mo<strong>the</strong>r, daughter <strong>of</strong> thy Son,<br />

humblest and most exalted <strong>of</strong> all earth’s children,<br />

fixed goal <strong>of</strong> eternal wisdom,<br />

Thou art she through whom human nature<br />

was ennobled, when <strong>the</strong> Creator<br />

did not disdain to fashion himself on <strong>the</strong>e.<br />

In thy womb was love reborn,<br />

through whose warmth in eternal peace<br />

this flower germinated.<br />

Thou art for us <strong>the</strong> noonday torch<br />

<strong>of</strong> charity, and here below, for mortals<br />

thou art <strong>the</strong> lively fount <strong>of</strong> hope.<br />

Lady, thou art so great, so worthy,<br />

that whoever wants grace but seeks it not <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>e<br />

has a desire that, wingless, cannot fly.<br />

Thy beneficence not only succours<br />

those who ask, but many a time<br />

freely anticipates <strong>the</strong> appeal.<br />
