La Street Art è un fenomeno underground entrato gradualmente nel circuito dell’arte convenzionale. Si è sviluppato come movimento culturale e sociale di massa alla fine degli anni Novanta, diffondendosi nei centri delle grandi metropoli nord-americane, in Europa e negli altri continenti. Incorporando e creando una varietà di nuove forme di espressione e linguaggi nati dalla contaminazione di culture diverse, la Street Art ha fortemente influenzato l’arte, la musica, la moda, il design, il cinema e la letteratura. I lavori di giovani artisti di strada hanno ottenuto riconoscimenti da riviste, gallerie d’arte e importanti collezionisti. Combinando immagini dal vero con interviste a esponenti del mondo dell’arte, giornalisti, sociologi e DJ, il film trasmette il dinamismo e la brillante creatività di questo movimento artistico emergente. Pablo Aravena vive e lavora a Montreal ed è regista, ricercatore e produttore. Ha studiato produzione cinematografica alla Concordia University, laureandosi nel 1997. Lavora come freelance nel campo del cinema e della televisione e ha diretto documentari, video e video-reportage nel campo musicale. Attualmente il suo interesse è volto verso i vari aspetti della cultura urbana. NEXT: A Primer on Urban Painting, la cui lavorazione è durata quattro anni, è il suo primo lungometraggio. Urban Culture is an underground phenomenon, which is steadily and subtly seeping into the mainstream. This hybrid culture, originating as a mix of music and new forms of visual expression, was born in the large metropolitan centers of North America and Western Europe. A dynamic blend of minority and immigrant cultures, it exploded out of the inner cities in the late 20th century, carrying the underground torch into the 21st century. Incorporating, appropriating, and creating a variety of forms of expression, it has greatly influenced new music, fashion, art, design, film, and literature. Painting has been taken in a new direction by a global group of young artists arising out of Urban Culture. Their work has gained recognition among their peers as well as by magazines, art galleries, and important collectors. Combining vérité visual moments and interviews with painters, journalists, collectors, sociologists, DJ’s, art critics and other participants within the subculture, the film conveys the dynamism and creative brilliance of this important emerging artistic movement. 32

È anche produttore e regista cinematografico. Ricordiamo i film: Just Cause, 1995; The Mambo Kings, 1992; The Good Mother, 1988; Gorillas in the Mist e Legal Eagles, 1986. Nel 2003 ha ricevuto la Legion d’Onore dal Presidente della Repubblica francese. E’ nel consiglio direttivo dell’African Environmental Film Foundation e del Mount Sinai Medical Center di New York. È autore di numerose pubblicazioni tra cui Agnes Martin, 2000; Je Suis le Cahier: The Sketchbooks of Picasso, 1986; Modern Art and Modern Science: The Parallel Analysis of Vision, 1984; Louise Nevelson, 1972. Insieme con Milly Glimcher, ha pubblicato nel 2001 Adventures in Art: 40 Years at Pace. Questo film ci mostra gli effetti e l’influenza della rivoluzione tecnologica ed in particolare dell’aviazione e del cinema su artisti come Pablo Picasso e Georges Braque. Con la narrazione di Martin Scorsese e interviste a studiosi d’arte e artisti, tra cui Chuck Close, Julian Schnabel e Eric Fischl, il film esamina l’incontro tra cinema e arte all’inizio del XX secolo e ci aiuta a comprendere la continua influenza del cinema sull’arte del nostro tempo. This film is a cinematic tour through the effects of the technological revolution, specifically the invention of aviation, the creation of cinema and their interdependent influence on artists Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque. With narration by Scorsese, and interviews with art scholars and artists including Chuck Close, Julian Schnabel and Eric Fischl, the film examines the collision course between film and art at the turn of the 20th Century and helps us to comprehend cinema’s continuing influence on the art of our time. 33
