L’XI edizione del Lucca Film Festival è la prima che coincide con l’inizio della primavera.
E’ molto probabile che da ora in poi la seconda metà di marzo diventi la collocazione stabile del
Festival. Uscire dal più “sicuro” fine settembre/inizio ottobre può rappresentare nell’immediato
un rischio di minore visibilità mediatica, abbondantemente bilanciato dall’essere l’” evento di
punta” della città per tutti i primi mesi dell’anno.
L’XI edizione del Lucca Film Festival è anche la prima ad esser collegata allo storico festival
viareggino “Europa Cinema”. Due marchi prestigiosi raggruppati in un unico evento! Entrambi
potrebbero (dovranno) uscirne rafforzati. Le crisi spesso aiutano a trovare soluzioni intelligenti.
Ci auguriamo che questo diventi un caso di scuola e sia percepito come un esempio di “buona
pratica”.
La formula non cambia. Ed è giusto! Si amplia però di contenuti. E si allunga temporalmente.
Accanto alla settimana del Festival si innestano eventi espositivi ed altre attività strettamente collegati
all’autore al quale il Festival è dedicato; quest’anno, appunto, David Cronenberg. Quattro
mostre (Evolution, Red Cars, M.Butterfly e Chromosomes) in quattro località diverse – realizzate
grazie al Comitato Nuovi Eventi per Lucca – ed ospitate, a Lucca, presso i locali espositivi
della Fondazione Ragghianti, dell’Archivio di Stato e del Museo Casa Natale di Giacomo Puccini
ed a Viareggio, presso la Galleria d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea.
Lucca e Viareggio come luogo unico nel quale per due mesi si hanno i maggiori eventi nazionali
legati alla diffusione della cultura cinematografica: è questo l’obiettivo primario che il “nuovo
corso” del Festival si è posto.
Obiettivo sul quale i numerosi attori del territorio, coinvolti sul tema, ci auguriamo convergano
definitivamente. Territorio ricco di radici profonde e valori importanti, da non disperdere.
E’ un’occasione irripetibile: c’è volontà di collaborazione, ci sono professionalità riconosciute, c’è
pianificazione organizzativa, c’è l’apporto massimo da parte di tutti, ci sono risorse economiche
contenute ma adeguate. C’è insomma un sistema potenzialmente in grado di fare – finalmente!
– “sistema” (e scusate il gioco di parole).
E poi c’è l’inizio della primavera… non poteva esserci davvero scelta migliore.
Come per tutti gli altri grandi ospiti di questa edizione del Festival: Jeremy Irons, Alfonso Cuaròn,
Terry Gilliam, Matteo Garrone.

The 11th Edition of the Lucca Film Festival is the first one which coincides with the beginning of Spring.
It is highly likely that from now on the second half of March will become the Festival’s permanent time
placing. Leaving the “safer” late September/early October date in the short term may represent a
risk of diminished media visibility. A risk that is amply offset by the Film Festival becoming the flagship
event of the city of Lucca in the early months of the year.
The 11th Edition of the Lucca Film Festival is also the first one to be linked to “Europa Cinema”, the
historic festival held in Viareggio. Two prestigious events join forces! Both could (will have to) come out
stronger. A time of crisis often helps us find intelligent solutions. We hope that this will become a case
study and be seen as a benchmark.
The formula will not change. And it is right not to! Lucca Film Festival however expands its content and
stretches over a longer period of time.
Other exhibits and events are planned in the weeks surrounding the Festival itself. Activities that are
closely tied to the author to whom the festival is dedicated, specifically in 2015 to filmmaker David
Cronenberg. Four exhibitions to be held at four different locations: Evolution, Red Cars, M.Butterfly
and Chromosomes were made possible by the Comitato Nuovi Eventi per Lucca and produced by
the Toronto International Film Festival and Volumina. Exhibit venues in Lucca are the Fondazione
Ragghianti, the State Archives and the Giacomo Puccini Birthplace Museum. In Viareggio, the Gallery
of Modern and Contemporary Art.
Lucca and Viareggio as a single venue where for two months major national events related to the
propagation of film culture take place. This is the primary goal of the “new course” that the Festival
has set.
An objective which we hope the many local actors involved in the event will share. A land with deeply
rooted values, an important heritage that should not be squandered.
It is a unique opportunity. There is the willingness to cooperate, there are recognized professionals;
organizational planning is in place, all are giving the Festival their best, limited but adequate financial
resources are lined up. Indeed, we have the potential to - finally- adopt a systematic approach!
Additionally, Spring is in the air…What better choice?
The same can be said of all the great guests of this year’s Festival. What better choice than Jeremy
Irons, Alfonso Cuaròn, Terry Gilliam and Matteo Garrone
