Una notte, il piccolo Kevin, undicenne con carenze affettive (i suoi genitori
sembrano preoccuparsi soltanto della casa e degli elettrodomestici), guarda
stupefatto uscire dall’armadio della sua stanza un gruppo di simpatici gnomi
che gli mostrano una straordinaria mappa. I visitatori gli spiegano in fretta
che sulla carta in loro possesso sono indicate alcune porte dimensionali,
veri e propri buchi nel tempo per spostarsi con facilità da un’epoca all’altra,
e si mostrano ansiosi di riprendere il viaggio. Accompagnandosi agli gnomi,
Kevin salta all’interno della storia e della fantasia e, vivendo straordinarie
avventure, conosce personaggi celebri e leggendari come Agamennone, Robin
Hood, Napoleone Bonaparte, e viaggia a bordo del Titanic. Nel corso
della vicenda il bambino impara a conoscere meglio anche i suoi strani
compagni che approfittano dei varchi temporali per rubare tesori favolosi e
che confessano candidamente di aver rubato la mappa all’Essere Supremo
e di essere tallonati dal diavolo in persona. La comicità demenziale e la vena
satirica dei Monty Python (del gruppo ci sono oltre al regista, Palin e Cleese
che interpreta Robin Hood) danno vita ad una divertente divagazione in
chiave “fantasy” sul tema dei viaggi nel tempo.
One night, little Kevin, an eleven-years old boy with affection deficiencies (his
parents seem to worry only about the house and household appliances) stunningly
watches a group of friendly dwarves coming out of the closet in his room
showing him an extraordinary map. The visitors briefly explain him that in the
map they own there are some dimensional doors revealed, proper time-holes
throught which is possible to easily travel among various ages, and they are eager
to continue their journey. Joining the dwarves, Kevin jumps inside history and
fantasy and, living extraordinary adventures, meets legendary and famous people
like Agamemnon, Robin Hood, Napoleon, and sails on board of Titanic. In the
course of the sequence of events the child also gets to know better his strange
companions which take advantage of the time portals to steal great treasures
and confess him to have stolen the map from the Supreme Being and that they
are now tailgated by the devil himself. Monty Phyton’s (together with the director,
from the group we find Palin and Clees playing Robin Hood) wacky humour and
satirical mood give life to an amusing “fantasy” digression on time travels.

Sam Lowry è un tecnocrate in una futuristica società contorta e inefficiente.
Sogna una vita in cui può volare lontano dalla tecnologia e dalla burocrazia
opprimente e dove può passare l’eternità con la donna dei suoi sogni.
Mentre cerca di rettificare l’arresto avvenuto per errore di un certo Harry
Buttle, Lowry incontra la donna che ha sempre inseguito nei suoi sogni, Jill
Layton.
Nel frattempo, la burocrazia lo indica come responsabile di una serie di
bombardamenti terroristi; la vita di Sam e Jill è in pericolo.
Uno dei capolavori del regista, tra i più importanti film di fantascienza della
storia. La distopia orwelliana si confà perfettamente all’immaginario grottesco
e caricaturale di Terry Gilliam, che crea un mondo del futuro barocco e
debordante, con influenze dalle maggiori correnti artistiche del ‘900.
Sam Lowry is a harried technocrat in a futuristic society that is needlessly convoluted
and inefficient. He dreams of a life where he can fly away from technology
and overpowering bureaucracy, and spend the eternity with the woman of his
dreams. While trying to rectify the wrongful arrest of one Harry Buttle, Lowry
meets the woman he is always chasing in his dreams, Jill Layton. Meanwhile, the
bureaucracy fingers him as responsible for a series of terrorist bombings, and
both Sam and Jill’s lives are put in danger.
One of the director’s masterpieces, one of the most important sci-fi films in
history. Orwell’s dystopia suit perfeclty Terry Gilliam’s grotesque and absurd unconscious,
as he creates a baroque and overflowing future world, influenced by
the majors artistic waves of the 20th century.
