vanno a trovarlo al museo per fargli un’offerta. Gli chiedono di
lavorare come tecnico ai cavi per il film La víspera di Alejandro
Pelayo (1982), un lavoro che è per certi versi la sua salvezza.
Dopo ciò, infatti, fa da aiuto regista per il film di García Agraz,
Nocaut (1984), e per un’altra numerosa serie di suoi film. E’
anche regista di seconda unità in Gaby, Una storia vera (1987),
e co-writer nonché regista di alcuni episodi della serie La Hora
Marcada (1986).
Un giorno di capodanno, decide di non continuare a fare l’aiuto
regista, e con suo fratello Carlos inizia a scrivere quello
che sarebbe stato il suo primo lungometraggio: Uno per tutte
(1991). Dopo aver finito di scrivere la sceneggiatura, il problema
rimane quello di trovare il sostegno finanziario necessario
a produrre il film. Ma l’I.MC.I.N.E. (Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografia),
che produce film, aveva già deciso quali progetti
sarebbero stati finanziati quell’anno, con grande dispiacere di
Alfonso. Fortunatamente, il regista di uno di questi progetti già
selezionati non è in grado di dirigerlo, e il suo progetto viene
cancellato. Uno per tutte prenderà il suo posto. A dispetto di
ciò, c’erano comunque molte tensioni tra Alfonso e i dirigenti
della I.M.C.I.N.E., e ciononostante, il film avrà molto successo.
Al Toronto International Film Festival vince molti premi e Alfonso
inizia ad essere notato dai produttori Hollywoodiani.
Sydney Pollack è il primo a invitarlo a girare a Hollywood.
Propone ad Alfonso la direzione di un lungometraggio, ma il
progetto non funziona e viene cancellato. Cuarón si sposta
a Los Angeles senza nulla di concreto tra le mani, stando da
amici, senza un soldo. Subito dopo, Pollack lo chiama di nuovo
per girare un episodio chiamato Fallen angels: murder, obliquely
(1993) della serie Fallen angels, che è il primo lavoro che riceve
negli Stati Uniti, nonché l’occasione di lavorare con Alan
Rickman. Dopo un po’, e senza alcun impiego di regia, Alfonso
vuole darsi da fare a dirigere qualcosa per guadagnarsi un po’
di soldi. Firma un contratto con la Warner Bros per dirigere il
film Addicted to love. Ma, una notte, legge la sceneggiatura per
un altro film, La piccola principessa (1995) e se ne innamora.
Parla con la Warner Bros e dopo alcuni incontri rinuncia alla
regia del primo film per dedicarsi a quest’ultima sceneggiatura.
Pur pensando che non fosse un film da successo al botteghino,
esso riceve comunque due nominations agli Oscar, e vince
anche molti altri premi.
Dopo questo film, Alfonso lavora ad un progetto con Richard
Gere come protagonista. Il progetto viene cancellato, ma
Cuarón riceve un’offerta dalla Twentieth Century Fox per dirigere
l’adattamento moderno di un classico di Charles Dickens:
Paradiso Perduto (1998). Inizialmente è esitante, ma lo Studio
insiste, e finisce per accettare l’incarico. L’esperienza si rivela
dolorosa e difficile per lui, soprattutto perché non c’era una
sceneggiatura definitiva. Riunitosi con il produttore Jorge Vergara,
fondano insieme la “Anhelo Productions” e la “Moonson
Productions”. La prima immagine della Anhelo sarà anche il
futuro film di Alfonso, il road movie erotico Y tu mamá también
- Anche tua madre (2001), che ha un enorme successo.
Durante la promozione del film a Venezia, Cuarón incontra
la critica cinematografica Annalisa Bugliani. Iniziano a frequentarsi
per sposarsi lo stesso anno. Successivamente accetta di
dirigere il terzo film della saga di Harry Potter, Harry Potter e
il prigioniero di Azkaban, che uscirà nel 2004 rivelandosi il più
grande successo al botteghino della sua carriera.
Nel 2003 ha una figlia, Tess Bu Cuarón, e nel Febbraio del
2005 un altro figlio, Olmo Teodoro Cuarón. Dirige un episodio
di cinque minuti di Paris, je t’aime (2006), con Nick Nolte e
Ludivine Sagnier. Il seguente progetto è il futuristico I figli degli
uomini, con Clive Owen, Julianne Moore e Michael Caine in
anteprima al Festival di Venezia nel 2006, che riceve ben tre
nominations agli Oscar. L’anno seguente realizza il piccolo documentario
The Possibility of Hope. Dopo la diagnosi di autismo
al figlio, e il divorzio da Annalisa Bugliani, Cuarón si prende una
pausa dalla regia per stabilirsi a Londra, dove intende lavorare
ai suoi progetti futuri.
Finalmente, sei anni dopo è la volta di Gravity (2013), pellicola
che segna il ritorno dell’autore alla fantascienza con George
Clooney e Sandra Bullock, che incasserà più di 700 milioni di
dollari in tutto il mondo, conquistando inoltre ben 7 premi
Oscar. L’anno successivo il regista crea e produce la serie televisiva
Believe (2014), di cui dirige l’episodio pilota. Le vicende
di una ragazzina dai poteri soprannaturali, però, non ottengono
il successo sperato e la serie, dopo i 13 episodi della prima
stagione, non viene rinnovata.

One New Year’s Day, Cuarón decides not to continue being an
assistant director; and with his brother Carlos, starts writing
what would then become his first feature film Sòlo con tu pareja
(1991). Once the script was finished, Cuarón set out to find
the financial support needed to produce the film. However, the
I.MC.I.N.E. (Instituto Mexicano de Cinematography), which produces
films, much to Alfonso’s disappointment had already decided
which projects would be funded that year, Fortunately, the director
of one of the projects that had already been selected was unable
to direct it and consequently his project was canceled. Sòlo con tu
pareja takes its place and, despite tensions between Alfonso and
the heads of IMCINE, the film is very successful.
Cuarón wins many awards at the Toronto International Film Festival;
and Hollywood producers start noticing the Mexican filmmaker.
Sydney Pollack was the first to invite him to shoot in Hollywood,
asking him to direct a feature film; the project did not
work out and was cancelled. All the same, Cuarón moved to Los
Angeles - nothing concrete in his hands, staying at friends and
penniless. Soon after, Pollack called him again to shoot an episode
called Fallen Angels: murder, obliquely (1993) of the television series
“Fallen Angels. This was Alfonso Cuarón’s first chance to work
in the United States, as well as an opportunity to collaborate with
Alan Rickman.
After some time, Alfonso seeks new directing opportunities, also
way to earn some money. He signed a contract with Warner Bros.
to direct the film Addicted to Love. One night though, he reads
the script for another film, A Little Princess (1995) and falls in
love with the story. After meeting with Warner Bros, the Mexican
filmmaker gave up directing the first film, to devote himself to the
latter. Although A Little Princess was not a box-office hit, the film
was critically acclaimed, received two Oscar nominations and won
many other awards.
Following A Little Princess, Alfonso worked on a project with Richard
Gere cast as the protagonist. The project was canceled, but
Cuarón received an offer from Twentieth Century Fox to direct
the modern adaptation of Charles Dickens’ classic Great Expectations
(1998). Initially he hesitated, but the Studio insisted, and
Cuarón ended up taking the job. This experience turned out to
be quite painful and difficult for him, especially as there was no
final script.
Cuarón joined forces with producer Jorge Vergara and together
they established “Anhelo Productions” and “Monsoon Productions”.
The first image of Anhelo will also be Alfonso’s future film,
the erotic road movie Y Tu Mamá También (2001), which is hugely
successful. During the promotion of the film in Venice, Cuarón met
film critic Annalisa Bugliani; they started dating and got married
that same year. Subsequently, Cuarón agreed to direct the third
film of the Harry Potter series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of
Azkaban; released in 2004. The movie became the biggest box
office hit of the Mexican filmmaker’s career.
In 2003, Cuarón had a daughter, Tess Bu Cuarón, and in February
2005 another son, Teodoro Olmo Cuarón. He directs a five-minute
episode of Paris, je t’aime (2006), starring Nick Nolte and Ludivine
Sagnier. His next project was the futuristic Children of Men,
starring Clive Owen, Julianne Moore and Michael Caine, premiered
at the Venice Film Festival in 2006, and received three Oscar
nominations. The following year Cuarón shot a short documentary,
The Possibility of Hope. After his son was diagnosed with autism
and following the divorce from Annalisa Bugliani, Alfonso takes a
break from directing and settles in London, where he intends to
work on his future plans.
Finally, six years later, Gravity (2013) hits the screens, a film that
marks the filmmaker’s return to science fiction with George Clooney
and Sandra Bullock starring in the leading roles. The film
grosses more than $ 700 million worldwide, and wins a stunning
7 Oscars. The following year, Cuarón creates and produces the
television series Believe (2014) and directs the pilot episode. The
story of a young girl with supernatural powers, however, does not
meet the expected success; and after the 13 episodes of the first
season, the series is not renewed.
