ciclostomizzatoQuando iniziamo <strong>la</strong> preparazione di un giro in bici,noi che viaggiamo, pensiamo ai chilometrigiornalieri, ai passi montani e ai dislivelli, allecittà antiche con le cattedrali e le mura, o ai marie ai fiumi lungo i quali pedaleremo e che speriamodi raggiungere. Però c’è qualcosa che nonsi può mai mettere nel programma: l’essenzadel<strong>la</strong> scoperta del viaggio. Come con le personenuove: è conoscendole e vivendole man manoche le scopriamo, ma solo se sappiamo farci attenzione;altrimenti alimenteremo solo i nostripregiudizi. Ecco, è questo che ha di diverso ilviaggio in bicicletta rispetto a tutti gli altri mezzidi trasporto: ci facilita l’attenzione all’ambienteche attraversiamo e alle persone che incontriamo.Così i tour ciclistici, sapendoli vivere, ci rega<strong>la</strong>nospesso qualcosa che poi li renderà indimenticabili.Non solo <strong>la</strong> gioia dell’arrivo ai passi soprai 2.500 metri, ma addirittura anche gli inseguimentidei cani o <strong>la</strong> tremenda fatica di quandosi finisce l’acqua in salita renderanno indelebilequel giro, proprio come delle importanti esperienzedi vita. Uno dei viaggi in cui feci più scopertefu quando andai da Linz, <strong>la</strong> capitale dell’AltaAustria, a Budapest, <strong>la</strong> capitale dell’Ungheria.Un giro con solo un paio di salite, fino atre o quattrocento metri, e poi tanta pianura,prima lungo il grande Danubio e poi nel<strong>la</strong> piattaUngheria. Apparentemente monotono se nonfosse stato per il Danubio, e invece ...Penso di avervi già par<strong>la</strong>to del primo improbabileluogo in cui capitai. Al<strong>la</strong> periferia est di Viennami ritrovai in un campo nudisti lungo il Danubioove ero l’unico vestito, nessun imbarazzo daparte mia, anzi mi sentivo pienamente al mio postosul<strong>la</strong> pista cic<strong>la</strong>bile con <strong>la</strong> mia bicicletta chesulle borse <strong>la</strong>terali porta le targhette ‘EU’ diUnione Europea, e ‘I’ di Italia. Un ciclista che vieneda lontano, che va lontano.Situazioni mai vissute prima ne ebbi ancora altre.Una mi è forse partico<strong>la</strong>rmente cara. Avevo<strong>la</strong>sciato da un po’ Bratis<strong>la</strong>va e stavo peda<strong>la</strong>ndoin Slovacchia con direzione est, verso l’Ungheria,dove speravo di arrivare in serata a Gyor.Mi ero preso una strada paralle<strong>la</strong> al<strong>la</strong> stataleper avere meno automobili e viaggiavo in unapianura molto simile a quel<strong>la</strong> Padana: tanti campidi granoturco, un po’ di frumento e di pioppeti,e anche qualche campo di patate che da noimancano. In Slovacchia, almeno su quel<strong>la</strong> strada,mancavano i paesi o anche solo le frazioni.Ero in aperta campagna in un caldo pomeriggiodi giugno e non c’era più possibilità di vedere ilDanubio che scorreva parallelo al<strong>la</strong> strada a dueo tre chilometri a sud.“Peda<strong>la</strong>vo senza fretta” - cantava Riccardo Cocciante- e intanto pensavo che tra poco avrei dovutotrovare una strada a destra che mi avrebbeportato al Danubio dove, dal<strong>la</strong> carta stradale,avrei dovuto trovare un traghetto verso un’so<strong>la</strong>del fiume, lunga svariati chilometri e sul<strong>la</strong> qualec’era una strada asfaltata. Peda<strong>la</strong>re verso estsull’iso<strong>la</strong> con l’acqua vicina sarebbe stato sicuramentemeglio che farlo sul<strong>la</strong> strada in cui mitrovavo. Chissà ogni quanto tempo c’erano i traghetti?Aspettare mezzora sarebbe stato troppoe poi avrei dovuto attendere anche il traghettosuccessivo per tornare sul<strong>la</strong> terra ferma. Avreidovuto trovare qualcuno a cui chiedere, forseavrei trovato un chiosco all’incrocio.Ero immerso in questi pensieri quando velocissimomi superò un furgone che andò a fermarsia cento o duecento metri davanti a me. Che strano,pensai, fermarsi in aperta campagna senzaalcun motivo. E invece il motivo c’era: ne disceseun militare e il furgone ripartì rapido così comesi era fermato. Dopo un paio di passi il giovane,coperto dalle alte piante di mais, sparì dalmio sguardo andando a destra.Era un militare che stava tornando a casa e avevaricevuto un passaggio da un automobilistache si fidava del<strong>la</strong> divisa. Era una scena che miriportò al<strong>la</strong> mia infanzia e giovinezza quando ancheda noi in Italia i militari andavano a casa conle ore contate. Continuai a procedere “senzafretta” ritrovando quel passato conosciuto. Anchequando raggiunsi l’incrocio girai a destraanch’io. C’era un cartello stradale che, tra tanteparole sconosciute, conteneva il simbolo del traghetto.Era <strong>la</strong> strada che cercavo e avrei potutochiedere al soldato che frequenza avevano i traghettiper l’iso<strong>la</strong>. Ma non mi affrettai, mentre loavvicinavo continuavo a guardare il giovane checamminava apparentemente senza meta, perchéintorno non appariva alcun segno del<strong>la</strong> vicinanzadi un centro abitato. Mi sembrò di rivedere unIl Danubio, in bassa Austria, con abazia.26film del neorealismo italiano degli anni ‘50 inbianco e nero e volli vedere il mio film fino al<strong>la</strong>fine (anche se non avevo pagato il biglietto).Appena raggiunsi il soldato il film finì e rientrainel presente. Lo salutai in inglese e tedesco e luimi guardò con un’espressione interrogativa. Glidissi anche “buon giorno” in italiano e finalmentemi rispose qualcosa, ma l’espressione erasempre <strong>la</strong> stessa. Gli mostrai, sul<strong>la</strong> cartina, doveeravamo noi e mi fece sì con <strong>la</strong> testa. Accennaial traghetto e ancora una volta mi fece cennodi sì. Era già qualcosa e allora gli chiesi in italiano,contavo sull’espressività del<strong>la</strong> mia mimicafacciale, ogni quanto tempo c’era il traghetto perl’iso<strong>la</strong>. La sua faccia aveva ripreso il silenzio inizialecon l’inalterata espressione interrogativa.Capii che non c’era speranza, gli dissi un “arrivederci”in italiano e lo <strong>la</strong>sciai per tornare sul<strong>la</strong>mia vecchia strada. Continuavo a girarmi perguardarlo mentre camminava verso un luogolontano che non si scorgeva e dove avrebbe incontratoi suoi genitori e forse anche <strong>la</strong> sua ragazza.Che peccato - mi dicevo - è giovane, unbel ragazzo, alto e biondo, e non sa dire una paro<strong>la</strong>al di fuori del suo slovacco. Ed era già il secondoragazzo che incontravo in quel pomeriggioslovacco in quelle condizioni. Mi dispiaceva perlui ed ero triste perché era un’altra confermache le ragazze, nel centro di Bratis<strong>la</strong>va, eranosempre state agevolmente in grado di rispondermi,sono ormai meglio dei ragazzi, e non soloin Italia.Ripresi <strong>la</strong> mia peda<strong>la</strong>ta verso est, adesso un po’più sostenuta, pensando a quel<strong>la</strong> grande scuo<strong>la</strong>di vita che sono le felici giornate vissute daCiclostomizzato
