LA TESTA TAURINA DEL DUOMO DI FIRENZE
It is easy to bump into architectural oddities while strolling in
Florence, to which local folklore has given bizarre origins. This
is what happened to an unusual sculpture portraying a huge bull’s
head which can be seen high up on the left side of the Duomo between
via Ricasoli and via dei Servi. Although it was common for the
builders to place sculptural details of animal features as a tribute to
all those towing animals which contributed to the building of Santa
Maria del Fiore, the cheeky Florentine wit spun a mischievous legend
around this one. It is said that a master builder, working on
the cathedral’s building site, was having an affair with the wife of
a tradesman nearby. The betrayed husband, having discovered the
affair, reported the secret lovers to the Ecclesiastic Tribunal with the
obvious consequences. With the love affair now over, the master builder,
not without mockery, decided anyway to place a bull’s head with
its beautiful horns in a precise point of the cathedral, in such a way
that it was always visible to the poor tradesman to daily remind him
of that bitter reality.

Passeggiando per Firenze è facile imbattersi in curiosità architettoniche
cui spesso la tradizione popolare ha voluto attribuire origini
fantasiose. È quello che è accaduto all’insolita scultura, raffigurante
una grossa testa di bue, che si può notare in alto sulla fiancata
sinistra del Duomo all’altezza tra via Ricasoli e via dei Servi. Per quanto
fosse uso dei costruttori sistemare dei particolari scultorei con fattezze
di animali, rendendo omaggio a tutte le bestie da traino che avevano
contribuito alla costruzione di Santa Maria del Fiore, lo spirito goliardico
dei fiorentini ci ricamò su invece una maliziosa leggenda. Si racconta
infatti che un capomastro, impiegato nel cantiere della cattedrale, avesse
una liaison adulterina con la moglie di un commerciante di lì vicino.
Il marito tradito, una volta scoperta la relazione, denunciò gli amanti
clandestini al Tribunale Ecclesiastico con conseguenze facilmente immaginabili.
Troncata la storia d’amore, il capomastro, non senza ironia,
decise tuttavia di piazzare la testa di un toro con le sue belle corna in
un punto preciso della cattedrale, di modo che fosse sempre a vista del
povero commerciante per ricordargli ogni giorno quell’amara verità.
