TUSCAN PEOPLE I Nano Campeggi

From poster designer to painter
of dreams. Nano Campeggi,
the Florentine artist described
by art historians as the last living
futurist who, by depicting filming
history with the faces of the stars,
has marked an era which is relived
today in his house at Bagno a Ripoli,
amongst hundreds of drawings and
sketches. We met him one mild afternoon
and it is here, among his drawings,
that the filming muse which
has always inspired him, stands out.
That of Marilyn’s (Monroe, ndr) who
asked him as she was being painted:
“Maestro, do I have to undress?”
and Nano to her: “Do as you wish,
Madam, I came here purposely to
paint you”. “Nano is the contemporary
representative”, says Cristina
Acidini, art historian, “of a large
movement which gave way to invisible
phenomena such as is wind, running,
vibration and speed, creating
borderline situations of which Nano
was and still is an extremely sensitive
interpreter”. The afternoon ensues
fast at “casa Campeggi” just like
his posters ensue one another while
the Maestro spreads them out on
the table; it is an orderly jumble of
images and faces, stories and battles,
of “illustrated jokes”. An imaginary
condominium, that of Nano’s, where
the observer travels meeting Totò,
Snow White, Tarzan, Tommy&Jerry;
and also the alien E.T. and Marlon
Brando. Even his Pinocchio manages
to converse with the enchanting
Marylin. Nano Campeggi is an artist
who opens up at 360 degrees, telling
anecdotes and oddities as he takes
us to his workbench full of brushes
with which he painted the history of
the Middle Ages. “There’s all the Tuscan
culture: Florence and its Calcio
Storico; Siena with its Palio; there’s
the battle of Campaldino where the
unmistakable horses emerge”. The
same ones in Ben Hur, the white
horses on the red background which
Nano had enhanced - creating scandal
- more than the leading actor of
the film, Charlton Heston. Following
this are the billboards of “Gone with

Da disegnatore di manifesti a
pittore di sogni. È Nano Campeggi,
l’artista fiorentino definito
dagli storici dell’arte l’ultimo
futurista vivente che raffigurando la
storia del cinema coi volti di dive e
divi, ha segnato un’epoca che ancora
oggi rivive nella sua casa di Bagno
a Ripoli, tra centinaia di disegni e
bozzetti. Lo abbiamo incontrato in
un tiepido pomeriggio ed è lì che fra
i disegni spicca la musa del cinema
che l’ha quasi sempre ispirato. Quella
Marylin (Monroe, ndr) che nel
farsi ritrarre ebbe a dirgli: “Maestro
mi devo spogliare?” e Nano a Lei:
“Signora faccia pure, io son venuto
qui apposta per disegnarla”. “Nano
è il rappresentante contemporaneo

che ha dato luogo a fenomeni di per
sé invisibili come il vento, la corsa,
la vibrazione e la velocità, creando
situazioni di confine di cui Nano è
stato ed è tuttora un sensibilissimo

interprete”. Il pomeriggio scorre veloce
a casa Campeggi, come lo scorrere
veloce dei suoi cartelloni mentre
il Maestro li stende sul tavolo; è un
affastellarsi ordinato d’immagini e
volti, di storie e battaglie, di ‘scherzi
illustrati’. Un condominio immaginario,
quello di Nano, all’interno
del quale l’osservatore compie un
viaggio incontrando Totò, Biancaneve,
Tarzan, Tommy&Jerry; e ancora,
l’extraterrestre E.T. e Marlon
Brando. Persino un suo Pinocchio
riesce a dialogare con l’incantevole
Marylin. Nano Campeggi è un artista
che si apre a 360 gradi, raccontandoci
aneddoti e curiosità mentre ci
conduce al suo tavolo da lavoro pieno
di pennelli coi quali ha dipinto
la storia del Medioevo. “C’è tutta la
cultura toscana: Firenze e il Calcio
Storico; Siena con il suo Palio; c’è la
Battaglia di Campaldino in cui emergono
gli inconfondibili cavalli”. Gli
