On 19th April we met a
street artist who was
doing a graffiti on a wall
of our school. His name
is Bart Smeets, but his
art name is Smates. He
is 40 years old, he is tall,
with brown hair and
green eyes.
What type of school did you
do?
After middle school I
decided to study
languages and Maths:
now I can speak French,
German, English and
Spanish. But later I
changed my course of
studies and I decided to do Art.
How many hours a day do you work?
Have you ever worked at night?
I usually work 7 hours a day; I’ve
never worked at night outside,
although I’ve worked inside a
building with the lights on.
Where and when did you start your
career?
In Belgium, where I was born. I
started painting some graffiti in a
place where you can paint
without doing a crime.
At the beginning of your career, did
your parents help you?
Yes they did. They advised me to
do some design courses first.
Anyway, then they’ve always
sustained me.
What do you do in your free time?
I usually draw or I go out with
my friends to drink something.

What do you like about Italy?
I love Italian breakfast and also
Italian food!!
Where is your biggest painting and
what does it represent?
In Belgium, it represents a big
cow near a dairy products factory,
so you can see the factory when
you are not near. It’s on a 22x38
wall.
Why have you painted small drawings
on the wall before starting your graffiti?
I use the small drawings to see
the proportions of my graffiti on
the wall.
How many spray paint do you use?
I usually use about 600 sprays,
but at home, I have almost 2000
sprays.
What is your favourite color to paint?
My favourite color is green, in my
new paintings I’d like to use

non tutto era chiaro, ma, man
mano che il tempo passava mi
sono appassionata sempre di più:
è riuscito a rendere l'argomento
in modo bellissimo e interessante.
Non abbiamo potuto fare
domande per assenza di tempo,
ma ho avuto l'onore di fargli una
domanda per me molto
significativa: Fin da piccolo ha avuto

What is your favourite
painting?
I have two favourite
paintings: a girl who
plays with water and a
big shark under a
bridge.
Have you painted your
house, too?
No, I haven't. Not at
all!
Have you ever done a
brand?
Yes, I have painted a
bottle of Monster and
Coke for a brand, but I
don’t really like this kind of
graffiti.
Have you ever fallen while painting?
Yes, I fell from 5 metres and I
broke my arm.
Do you like the other graffitis in this
school?
Yes, my favorite is Liquen’s
because it’s surreal and magical.
Do you think that’s right to paint
everywhere (monuments,
undergrounds,...)?
I think it isn’t fair, it’s good to
paint but not on historical
monuments or public places.
Meeting Smates was a fantastic
experience: we hope to repeat it,
maybe with another artist.

Mi ha risposto che l’ha capito al
liceo. Io sono ancora alle medie,
ma ho lo stesso desiderio, che
credo rimarrà mio per sempre.
Sono felice che con il Giornalino
della scuola la mia carriera sia già
potuta cominciare.
