In the northern area outside the basilica there are some Roman
Houses (ground Cossar): floors and foundations of patrician houses
can be seen with their beautiful and delicate mosaics (for this
reason some of them have been brought to the local archaeological
museum). It is difficult to say what kind of structure and how
many rooms could be found in these houses because of the shortage
of remains and the missing thresholds; in many cases several
floors were overlapped, which means that the houses were inhabited
for a long time and were restructured and paved over and over
again. From here you can reach the river harbour, where the ancient
quays and the rests of the warehouses can still be seen.
Today you can only see the quays on the west side: made of stone
of Istria (the most resistant to the corrosive action of the water), they
were some 300 meters long (the quay on the east bank was covered
after the excavations). The upper quay has horizontal rings for
mooring, the lower one has rests of vertical rings. The two quays
were used alternately in case of low and high tide.
The Roman harbour system of Aquileia was well integrated and included
a sea dock port, called Gradus, waterways and canals which
allowed the circumnavigation of the fourth most important city in
Italy of that time, after Rome, Mediolanum and Capua. Not to forget
is also the rich road network that connected the various areas of
the Roman Empire which stretched from Hadrian’s Wall in Brittany
to the Rhine and the Danube, to the Middleast and North Africa.
