Some of this new “Asian flavour” comes from the presence, for the first time, of China Southern Airlines – the regions top carrier, as well as Tuniu, a billion dollar Chinese online tour operator. Indeed, China is the word on most tour operators’ and travel agents’ lips around the world as the growth in high-spending outbound Chinese tourists continues unabated, accounting for a major part of the overall growth in international tourist figures. This year’s ITB Berlin thus marks a true turning point with the announcement for the first time of a firm “link” to China, as of next year, and Chinese operators and carriers also comforting the fact that the Berlin event is the ideal “window to the world”. At the same time, other major DMOs in Asia, such as Indonesia (see minister pictured left) reinforce their win-win cooperation with the world’s premier travel and tourism event. Oceania (+7%) and South-East Asia (+5%) led growth, while South Asia and in North-East Asia recorded an increase of 4%. China, with double-digit growth in expenditure every year since 2004, continues to lead global outbound travel, benefitting Asian destinations such as Japan and Thailand, as well as the United States and various European destinations.
