THE LIVING ROOM | DECK 1

THE LIVING ROOM | DECK 1 ØRNULF OPDAHL 1944 X NORWAY X OIL ON CANVAS Ørnulf Opdahl’s interpretation of the dramatic landscape of western Norway has been popular with a large audience for decades, and Opdahl is often referred to as the great romantic in Norwegian contemporary art, renewing the Norwegian landscape painting in the tradition of Old Masters such as J.C. Dahl and Peder Balke. A mixture of concrete experiences and abstract impressions converge in his quest to capture this majestic landscape and its changing atmospheres, outside his studio on the rugged west coast of Norway, in a language most Norwegians understand and recognize. Opdahl was a professor at the Academy of Fine Art in Oslo for several years, and his paintings are acquired in most public art collections in Norway. AVALANCHE | 2017 28

THE LIVING ROOM | DECK 1 LENE TANGEN 1971 X NORWAY X GLASS Norwegian glass artist Lene Tangen’s source of inspiration is the landscape and environment of the Arctic. She aims to capture the fleeting qualities and expressions in the transformation of liquid to a frozen state. The optical quality of glass gives space to highlight these contrasts, the key element of her work. She often shapes the inner forms to illustrate organic movement, frozen in time and space. Tangen’s method is experi mental. She mainly works with molded glass, freely combining the melted glass with other materials such as plaster, stone and metal. The molds are kept in a burning oven for several weeks before the glass sculpture solidifies and is ready to be polished into its final form. FROM THE SERIES UNIQUE EXPLORATIONS | 2017 29
