MANFREDI´S ITALIAN RESTAURANT | DECK 1 STEVEN FLEIT 1950 X USA X PAINTING Steven Fleit is a self-taught American artist from Rowley, Massachusetts, who has been painting for nearly 20 years. All his paintings are indicative of the places he has visited. Morning in Venice 4 is a familiar scene from the enchanting Italian city and was made after an early morning walk along the canals. The exposed red and yellow brick buildings are beautifully reflected in the undisturbed water, and a low-hanging bridge can be spotted around the next corner. MORNING IN VENICE 4 | 2013 58

He creates delicately balanced sculptures of naturally weathered rocks and stones in their natural settings and captures their transient beauty by photographing them. The juxtaposition of simplicity and impossibility in his work inspires a sense of magic and wonder in all who see it. Yet, for Gray himself, the process of balancing stones is a calming, therapeutic, puzzling and even spiritual experience. The almost meditative act forces him to absorb himself as he “listens” with his fingers and targets his focus fully. During the past 14 years, his work has evolved to include new ideas and themes, but its predominant feature remains the beauty and seemingly impossible nature of balance. RAM SPLASH | 2014 59
