THE RESTAURANT | DECK 2 MARIANNE WIIG STORAAS 1972 X NORWAY X OIL ON CANVAS Norwegian artist Marianne Wiig Storaas is known for her paintings that challenge the portraiture genre. By using traditional crafts to describe a complex contemporary moment, Wiig Storaas belongs to a generation of Norwegian painters who emphasize Renaissance and baroque craft qualities. She allows this painterly tradition to fuse with experiences from modernist photography and conceptual art. Wiig Storaas’s pictures describe different physical and mental spaces. She uses her paintings to make us aware that we, upon encountering her work, are observers, watching her sitters. But there is also something slightly more picturesque in her work, recalling the paintings of Danish Vilhelm Hammershøi from around 1900. Here, what is absent, the emptiness, is psychologically charged and the mood serves as an equally important theme as the room itself. 38
