How to use the guide The Arboretum in Hørsholm was founded on farmland in 1936 on initiative of C. Syrach-Larsen. The small 100-year-older arboretum in Charlottenlund, "The Forest Botanical Garden", belongs to the Arboretum and has developed into a mixed woodland, rich in large and older specimens. Less than a hundred species of trees, shrubs and climbers are native to Denmark. In spite of the poor native dendroflora, a rich variety of exotic species and provenances may be grown in the Danish climate. At present the collections of the Arboretum include approx. 1600 species and subspecies in an area of 15 hectares. An extension of 10 hectares has recently been established on the fields of "Frihedslyst" at the southern border of the Arboretum. Additionally, an area of 100 hectares westwards ("Forskningscentret ved Hørsholm") and 20 hectares of the state forest "Folehaven" eastwards are run by the Arboretum. The staff counts approx. 35 members. Being the Danish National Arboretum, the Arboretum of the Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University is obliged to establish and maintain an extensive collection of trees and shrubs adaptable to the Danish climate. The collections serve basic and applied scientific research as well as the education in in botany and related fields. Additionally, the collections provide seed, cuttings, and grafts to nurseries, and improved plant material to be used in gardens, forests, shelterbelts, towns and landscapes. Half of the scientific staff is occupied with research in plant geography, natural variation, evolution, and taxonomy, besides introductory and managing work. The other half concentrates on forest genetics and tree-breeding. Research is carried out in areas of breeding strategy, early testing and ecophysiology. The Arboretum is responsible for national breeding programmes in Norway spruce and Sitka spruce, the economically important conifers in Denmark. All staff members deal with adaptability and aspects of utilisation. Staff members lecture at the Vet. & Agric. University on forest genetics, tree-breeding, and forest history. During the year many scientists and practicians visit the Arboretum, some for a longer stay. Visitors are welcome on Monday-Friday within working hours 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., please turn to the office on arrival. Permission to visit at other times requires a special appointment. The nearest bus-stop is on Kongevejen by Dr. Neergårdsvej, at the roundabout, 200 m west of the Arboretum-entrance (use the path along The Forest and Landscape Research Institute). Catch e.g. the rush-hour line no. 173E from the Town Hall Square in Central Copenhagen, or busses from train stations Lyngby and Holte. From Kokkedal station go by bus lines 300S or 500S to Hørsholm and walk
