Preface
Statistics Norway - as part of its continuing work on standards - has drawn up lists of words and
definitions for main concepts used in the work on economic statistics. Four lists of words covering
English and the two official languages in Norway are presented: English-Norwegian, Norwegian-
English, English-New Norwegian, New Norwegian-English, all in alphabetical order.
The selection of words and concepts is basically directed from the needs of national accounts, but it
covers the main words and concepts in other economic statistics as well. In addition, a number of
words and concepts from other statistical areas have also been included. A main starting point has
been English words and concepts as contained in the international standard SNA 1993 (System of
National Accounts), which is the new international standard of national accounts. It also plays the role
as an «umbralla» for all economic statistics, and to some extent also social statistics. Another base
for the selection is words and concepts which are found in the publications of Statistics Norway.
The purpose of the publication is foremost a more uniform use of words and concepts within the
various units of Statistics Norway. The lists of words should support a more standardized translation
practice. They will also improve the understanding of the conceptual contents through the given
definitions, not the least the national accounts concepts, and thereby support a more uniform
presentation of metadata in Statistics Norway. This publication is provisional. Later, an enlarged issue
might be published, with a more detailed coverage on areas like population, environmental and social
statistics.
The Standard Committee (previous: The Reference Group on Standards) in Statistics Norway initiated
this work and has contributed to the result in this publication. Drafts were commented by the
statistical subject sections and the Research Department in Statistics Norway. The publication has
been prepared under supervision of Senior Adviser Erling Joar Fløttum has played a central role in the
various phases of the work and in finalizing the publication. Special thanks to Marit Vågdal for
valuable technical assistance and Anne Gro Hustoft for valuable assistance with the New Norwegian
