SØRAL consumes around5 cubic m/hour of fresh water fromthe Helland River for sanitary anddrinking.For cooling the machinery, SØRALuses approx. 530 cubic m/hour.This water is tapped from theOpsanger Lake and River.To reduce the water consumptionis a priority.No complaints from neighbourshave been recorded in 20<strong>06</strong>.SØRAL signed a voluntary agreementwith the “Ministry of theEnvironment” on the 9th of June,1997, regarding less emission ofgreenhouse gasses from the plant.In the agreement, SØRAL committeditself to reducing emissions ofgreenhouse gasses CF 4 and C 2 F 6,per ton aluminium produced, by50% by year 2000 and by 55% by2005.
