En hilsen fra Joyce Saricks
When Nancy Brown and I first wrote about our experiences creating a Readers’ Advisory department at
our library, we knew that the principles would translate to other library situations, with each library making it
their own. We had no idea the translation would be literal! Welcome, Norway, to the community of
readers’ advisors.
Although I can’t read Norwegian, I’m sure this book is full of advice that will help you improve your
readers’ advisory skills and create an atmosphere in your libraries where readers are comfortable talking
about and sharing books - stories, really, whether in print, audio, or video. Doing Readers’ Advisory is a
mindset: we’re listening for readers to tell us what they enjoy and we’re offering titles that might work for
them. It’s patron-centered, and it’s all about possibilities. About setting up long-term relationships with
readers. About making the offering of suggestions part of our routine. About becoming familiar with
authors and titles readers love, even if they aren’t our favorites. About sharing the pleasure all readers find
in the stories they enjoy.
I don’t think any aspect of library work is as intellectually satisfying and personally rewarding as is doing
Readers’ Advisory. Not to mention fun. I hope you will discover the same satisfactions and pleasures that
I have found doing Readers’ Advisory for more than 30 years.
Read, enjoy, and share the pleasure.
