J-Wow: Foram quatro noites fantásticas e depois o clube
fechou por problemas com a segurança. Mas essas
quatro noites foram o tubo de ensaio. E, no fim das
quatro noites, olhamos uns para os outros e pensamos:
o que vamos fazer a seguir?
Perceberam que havia ali um nicho de mercado, que
as pessoas se apropriaram das vossas músicas?
J-Wow: Não havia como não perceber isso. Na primeira
noite tivemos umas 20 pessoas e na quarta estavam
mais de 400 e com muita gente de fora que não conseguia
entrar.
E depois o clube fechou!
J-Wow: Epah, a culpa pode ter sido nossa (risos).
Kalaf: Sentimos que tínhamos algo que representava
muito a nossa cidade, e era algo com que aquelas pessoas
se identificavam naquele momento. O passo de
começarmos a fazer originais foi quase que automático.
Foi natural?
Kalaf: Sim foi natural. E não podemos esquecer que,
na altura, a internet, o my space estavam já muito presentes
na sociedade e dessa forma foi fácil comunicarmos
com o mundo e a receber feedback direto. A dada
altura tínhamos a nossa cidade, o mundo à espera das
nossas novidades, de ver aquilo que tínhamos para dar.
E optámos, na altura, por fazer o nosso primeiro CD
com 700 exemplares. Foi a partir daqui que começou
a nossa preocupação de fazermos discos com identidade,
com estética…
E não olharam uns para os outros e perante tamanha
apropriação da vossa música pensarem: isto é
mesmo sério!
J-Wow: Não, não ficamos assim tão surpreendidos.
Na verdade, quando se faz música séria, quando se
faz música com todo o sentimento e se coloca nela a
nossa vivência, creio que acaba por funcionar. Quando
se vive na Amadora, mas o que gostamos mesmo
é da Jamaica e queremos fazer reggae se calhar pode
não funcionar tão bem. Isso para nós não faz sentido,
porque só faz sentido se nos conseguirmos identificar
intrinsecamente com o que fazemos. E voltando à sua

of us were so low that when people started
to listen and see us they were getting
surprised.
But today this is no longer the case?
Kalaf: No, it is no longer the case today, not
so much, but at the beginning it was so. I
remember a time, in Luanda, we were part
of a festival of rockers and in our first five
minutes people were very sceptical and
looking at us and certainly thinking: ‘but
what are these guys doing here? What kind
of “Kuduro” is that these guys do? Dance
music with two drums on stage?’ And then
it was magical, loved it. In other words, the
beginning was complicated by not knowing
who we were and the kind of music we
were used to play.
And this brings me to your beginning.
In 2006 you record 700 CD and have
great success and are well received by
critics. Were you expecting all this initial
success?
Kalaf: No, we weren’t. We were quite
surprised.
And how came the idea of recording your
first CD? Certainly it is part of a journey
and I would like to know where the
beginning of that journey is?
J-Wow: We were already characters from
the music scene in Lisbon. Some of us
were DJ and we used to play music at
Clube da Esquina or Maria Cachucha. And
we had the will for some time now, to grab
and to develop a genre of dance music.
And the first idea was to create a night, it
was not a group or band, but rather a night
in a space in Lisbon called Clube Mercado
where we would go and play adapted versions
of kuduro and compilations. That is,
we took the songs and we reedited them.
We took the loops and we’ve transformed
those loops into our own versions. Then a
night we played for two hours and it created…

Kalaf: It started a motion, people began to
join in a massive way.
J-Wow: They were four fantastic nights and
later the club closed because of security
issues. But those four nights were our test
