Se determinada música vai mais
para o house, o tecno ou o kuduro,
bem, isso não é importante para
nós. Gerimos a musicalidade de
canção para canção.
If a certain song is more house,
techno or kuduro, well, that’s not
important to us. We manage the
musicality of each song.
society and thus it was easy to communicate with the world
and to receive direct feedback. At one stage we had our town,
the world waiting for our news, to see what we had to give.
And we’ve chosen, at the time, making our first CD with 700
copies. From that moment on started our concern to make
records with identity, with aesthetics…
And didn’t you look at each other and before such appropriation
of your music you thought: this is for real!
J-Wow: No, we weren’t so surprised. In fact, when music is
made for real, with all the feeling and we place it our experience,
I believe that it turns out to work. When you live in
Amadora, but what we like exactly is Jamaica and we want
to do reggae maybe may be not work so well. That makes
no sense to us, because it only makes sense if we manage to
identify closely with what we do. And going back to your
question, I was not surprised with the success and I was not
surprised when we went to London and it was a success
because I think there is in the world a search for everything
that is different. I felt we had something new in hands.
For your last work you’ve been closed in Monchique during
four weeks, how was this process? After these four
weeks are you still good with each other?
Kalaf: (laughter) Well… after six years we know each other
pretty well. We know how to deal with each other. We are
not the kind of band that seeks to do everything together.
There are points of contact, we must work together, take the
plane, driving on the road together, but when we are at home
each one follows his life, with friends and family. We get
together well, but we don’t live always together.
But who is more difficult to put up with? Who has the
worst temper?
Kalaf: It depends. If we have a task there is always one that
goes up to the last consequences and the other who won’t
until the last consequences. And the one that goes up to the
last consequences can bring up any intransigence, some
stubbornness that cannot be understood as `good temper’.
But we know how to cope well with because we know each
other long enough.
J-Wow: Honestly, I guess it’s me the most grumbler.
Your songs are quite sensual and even have a sexual connotation.
Is it something purposeful or it’s very connected
to kuduro, which is a type of music/dance sexy in itself?
(Laughter of both followed by a pause)
Kalaf: I don’t agree, I mean, I want to pick up on what you said
about kuduro: when we make music we do not have kuduro
in mind.
What do you have in mind?
Kalaf: Dance music. It’s here where we are. But, if a certain
