ABSTRACT
The present monographic work will evidence the representation of the prejudice and
the social hypocrisy, especially the condition of the black people in the XIX century,
in the romance “O Mulato”, written by Aluísio Azevedo, the author shows the reality
of the black people before the maranhense society of that time and that it is reflected
in the contemporaneity. For a better understanding and accomplishment of this
research it was necessary to disband it in three chapters: The Realistic Romance of
the XIX Century; The Biography of the Author; and the analysis of the romance “O
Mulato”. We perceive that the author denounces a city which is replete of prejudice, a
corrupted religion and a greedy society, thus the romance starts to be an object of
combat to these disgusting aspects of our reality.
