Abstract
One of the most important characteristics of the half-barren is the long drought periods which
is unfavorable to many cultures and where the cassava adapts and develops itself using little
water. Thus, this activity characterizes as an efficient opportunity of subsistence for the
region. The flour houses guarantee job and income for producers, relatives and other involved
agents, strengthen the economy of the localities where they are inserted. In this context, this
work aims to analyze the impact of the flour houses in the economic and social life of the
Campinhos quarter neighborhood producers in Vitória da Conquista, Bahia. This research has
exploratory and descriptive character with qualitative and quantitative boarding in the case
study. All the 15 flour houses of the quarter in the period of 11 of june to 26 of november of
2007 had been interviewed. Many difficulties faced by the producers were identified as:
decapitalization, lack of knowledge management, lack of incentives, inadequate
infrastructure, economic inviability of the activity and profits that decrease each year.
Currently only 27% of the establishments obtain a superior yield to a minimum wage which is
an extremely preoccupying fact considering that 93% of the interviewed people have the
activity as its only source of income. Considering the economic and social relevance of the
activity, urgency is needed on the next actions and probably the way for the activity
maintenance would be to revitalize the flour houses by stimulating their development,
enabling and to capitalizing the producers, since one of the most difficult factors is the lack of
capital, followed by the lack of investments and the lack of qualification.
