Canada prepares January
U-20 camp in Florida
Canada's January
men's U-20 camp is
set to open this week
in Sunrise, Florida. Coach Dale
Mitchell will have 20 players in
camp from Jan. 10-22 at Las
Palmas Hotel & Suites.
Mitchell and his team is gearing
up for the 2007 FIFA U-20
World Cup which will take
place in Canada this July.
"The purpose of the January training
camp is to continue to work with players
who are currently out of season or on a winter
break in the case of a few with European
clubs," says coach Mitchell. "I am interested
to see how five players who have not had
an opportunity with this team yet perform
during the camp."
The five new invitees are Matt Lam
(Edmonton) of AFC Ajax, Fabrice
Lassonde (Mont-Saint-Grégoire) and Sean
Rosa (Montréal) of the National Training
Centre in Québec, Isidro Sanchez Macip
(Puebla, Mexico) of Puebla de Zaragoza,
and Shaun Saiko (Edmonton) of
Middlesborough FC.
Fourteen of the other 15 players were
all at Mitchell's December camp in Florida,
including Andrea Lombardo who is a
holdover from Canada's U-20 team at the
2005 World Youth Championships. Keegan
Ayre (Coquitlam, BC) of Hibernian FC is
the other player who was not at the
December camp.
Along with the training, the Canadians
will also play the United States' U-20 team
before the Americans head off to their
CONCACAF qualifying tournament in
Panama on Jan. 14. The Canadians, meanwhile,
are planning to host their first two
international matches of the 2007 season on
home turf in March against Scotland: Mar.
24 in Burnaby and Mar. 27 in Victoria.

gonna be huge
In 2007, the world's biggest game is
coming to Canada. Canada will host the
World's finest under-20 players in six cities
across the country - Victoria, Burnaby,
Edmonton, Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal
- June 30 - July 22, 2007.
The biennial event is second only to the
FIFA World Cup in size and scope and
will showcase the most talented under-20
soccer players in the world. The tournament
has been the coming-out party for some of
the game's top players - Maradona, Saviola,
Raúl, Marco Van Basten, Luis Figo, Ruiz
Costa, Thierry Henry, Adriano, Roberto
Carlos, Bebeto and Dunga as well as
Canada's Craig Forrest and many members
of the current Men's World Cup Team
including Julian de Guzman, Paul Stalteri,
Atiba Hutchinson and Iain Hume.
Last held in CONCACAF in 1983 in
Mexico, Canada's most recent participation
in this event occurred last June in the
Netherlands from June 10 - July 2, 2005.
Canada enjoyed its best ever finish in a
World Championship in December 2003,
losing to eventual silver medalist Spain on
a golden goal in the quarter finals in the
United Arab Emirates.

Wycombe, da quarta divisão,
escandaliza o Chelsea
Continua patente a irregularidade
do Chelsea nesta fase da temporada.
A equipa de José Mourinho
foi envergonhada pelo sexto classificado da
League Two (o quarto escalão do futebol
inglês) que no seu campo conseguiu um
empate (1-1) na primeira mão da meia-final
da Taça da Liga.
Mesmo tendo em conta que os "blues"
têm tudo a seu favor para decidir a eliminatória
a seu favor e mesmo descontando o
facto de que o Chelsea estava muito desfalcado,
em especial no sector defensivo, o
empate deixa sabor amargo a Mourinho,
numa altura em que a contestação por parte
dos adeptos e dos media britânicos vêm
subindo de tom.
Poupando Drogba e Shevchenko e
deixando Lampard no banco, o adversário
do F.C. Porto na Liga dos Campeões teve
sempre uma atitude algo passiva no jogo e,
tendo inaugurado o marcador antes do
intervalo, por Wayne Bridge, num chapéu
de fora da área (36 m), deixou que os seus
adversários se moralizassem e começassem
a pressionar os "blues" nas imediações da
área, à custa de um futebol directo à procura
da cabeça dos seus avançados. Com
Hilário na baliza e Paulo Ferreira adaptado
a central, face à falta de especialistas nessas
posições, o Chelsea deixou-se ficar à mercê
de um Wycombe que, dentro das suas limitações,
acreditou ser possível fechar a noite
sem derrota.
E foi isso mesmo que aconteceu a 13
minutos do fim, quando um cabeceamento
de Mooney foi aproveitado por Easter para
ganhar em força a Essien, outro central
improvisado, e bater Hilário com um
remate rasteiro. Já com Lampard em
campo, o Chelsea ainda procurou o golo da
vitória, mas o jogo acabou assim mesmo,
com natural euforia para os adeptos dos visitados.
O Chelsea apresentou o seguinte onze:

Mourinho:
"O meu futuro não é importante"
José Mourinho não quer comentar os
rumores que falam da sua saída do Chelsea
no final da temporada. O técnico português
desvaloriza o assunto, preferindo concentrar-se
nos objectivos do clube para esta
época.
"A minha posição não é importante.
O importante é o Chelsea e
não eu, e a equipa está em boa
posição. Estamos na meia-final da
Taça da Liga, nos oitavos de final da
Liga dos Campeões e da Taça de
Inglaterra e em segundo no campeonato.
Foi sempre assim que trabalhei:
o meu futuro não é importante",
disse o "special one".
O Chelsea empatou, uma equipa da
quarta divisão inglesa, mas Mourinho considera
que foi um resultado positivo:
"Prefiro ganhar a empatar, mas se tivermos
em conta que foi a primeira-mão de uma
meia-final, fora de casa, penso que foi um
bom resultado."
O técnico deixou ainda uma palavra
para Paulo Ferreira e Essien, que foram utilizados
no centro da defesa: "Penso que
deram o seu melhor. Não é fácil jogar
naquela posição, especialmente neste país
onde todos jogam um futebol directo.
Penso que estiveram bem. O golo deveu-se
a problemas de posicionamento, mas não
posso criticá-los. O Paulo [Ferreira] é um
lateral direito e o Michael [Essien] é um
médio e eles fizeram o seu melhor, pela
equipa."

Procedural rules for the 2007 MLS
SuperDraft:
Draft Rounds: The 2007 MLS SuperDraft
will include four rounds and 52 selections.
Once a team has passed, it may no longer
participate in the Draft (e.g. may no longer
select players, use a timeout, etc.)
Selection Clock: Teams are permitted four
minutes to make a selection in the First and
Second Rounds. Teams are permitted three
minutes to make a selection in the Third
and Fourth rounds.
Intermissions: There will be a five
minute break between each round.
Timeouts: Each team is permitted one, five
minute timeout. Selections must be made
immediately following the timeout (no
additional time given). More than two timeouts
cannot be used consecutively.
Failure to Make Selection in
Designated Time: Teams that fail to make
their selection in the time must wait until
the next selection is made, regardless of
whether or not their choice is presented
prior to the next team's decision.
The team that was delinquent with its
selection must immediately have its choice
in hand following the selection of the team
that followed. If not, the original team must
again wait for the next selection to be made.
Trades: Prior to being announced, trades
need to be verified and approved by the
Commissioner or his designee.
