pela associação entre os interesses políticos e a face <strong>de</strong> naturalista. No cargo<<strong>br</strong> />
público <strong>de</strong> inten<strong>de</strong>nte <strong>do</strong>s diamantes <strong>do</strong> Serro <strong>do</strong> F<strong>rio</strong>, Câmara teve uma<<strong>br</strong> />
atuação <strong>de</strong> extrema relevância no contexto <strong>da</strong> política <strong>do</strong> <strong>gov</strong>erno joanino,<<strong>br</strong> />
ten<strong>do</strong> à frente D. Rodrigo <strong>de</strong> Sousa Coutinho, ministro <strong>do</strong>s Negócios Estrangeiros<<strong>br</strong> />
e <strong>da</strong> Guerra, que buscava promover o <strong>de</strong>senvolvimento econômico <strong>do</strong><<strong>br</strong> />
Brasil, por meio <strong>do</strong> fomento às ativi<strong>da</strong><strong>de</strong>s si<strong>de</strong>rúrgicas. Câmara trabalhou<<strong>br</strong> />
intensamente para o projeto <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>senvolvimento <strong>da</strong> indústria <strong>do</strong> ferro no<<strong>br</strong> />
Brasil. O objetivo central <strong>do</strong> artigo consiste em resgatar e analisar a atuação<<strong>br</strong> />
central <strong>do</strong> personagem para a aplicação firme e concreta <strong>de</strong>ssa política<<strong>br</strong> />
econômica <strong>do</strong> <strong>gov</strong>erno <strong>de</strong> D. João.<<strong>br</strong> />

ABStract<<strong>br</strong> />
The historical trajectory of Illust<strong>rio</strong>us Manuel Ferreira <strong>da</strong> Câmara is characterised<<strong>br</strong> />
by the association between political interests and his naturalist<<strong>br</strong> />
calling. In public office as Inten<strong>da</strong>nt of Diamantes Serro <strong>do</strong> F<strong>rio</strong>, Câmara had a<<strong>br</strong> />
role of extreme importance in the context of Dom João’s <strong>gov</strong>ernment policy<<strong>br</strong> />
led by Dom Rodrigo <strong>de</strong> Souza Coutinho, Minister of Foreign Affairs and<<strong>br</strong> />
War, that sought to promote the economic <strong>de</strong>velopment of Brazil, by encouraging<<strong>br</strong> />
ironworking activities. Câmara worked intensely on Brazil’s iron<<strong>br</strong> />
industry <strong>de</strong>velopment project. The main objective of the article is to recover<<strong>br</strong> />
and analyse the central activities of Câmara towards the firm and concrete<<strong>br</strong> />
implementation of this Dom João <strong>gov</strong>ernment economic policy.<<strong>br</strong> />
