A ciência é uma obra coletiva, que pretende compreender
o mundo. O trabalho desenvolvido no IGC
tem contribuído significantemente para o avanço
internacional da ciência. A educação, em particular
a educação científica, é o mais seguro de todos os
investimentos para um mundo melhor. Nesta área,
o IGC também já deu o seu contributo; em 1969,
introduziu a educação pós-graduada em Portugal
e gerações de estudantes iniciaram no IGC o seu
compromisso com a ciência. Ao longo dos últimos
17 anos, o IGC tem sido responsável por vários programas
de doutoramento que são hoje conhecidos
em todo o mundo e usados como exemplo de inovação
e excelência.

In 2011, the Institito Gulbenkian de
Ciência (IGC) celebrates 50 years,
since its foundation by the Board of
Trustees of the Calouste Gulbenkian
Foundation (FCG) on July 19,
1961. For us, scientists, this is a good
reason to celebrate, as the Institute
facilitated the major contributions
of the Foundation to science, one
of its four statutory goals.
Science is a collective enterprise that
aims to understand the world. The work
carried out at the IGC has significantly
contributed to the progress of science
worldwide. Education, particularly if
science-based, is the safest of all investments
for a better world. Also here, the
IGC has given its contribution: in 1969,
it introduced graduate education in
Portugal, and generations of students
started their commitment to science
here. Throughout the last 17 years,
the IGC has been responsible for a
handful of graduate programmes that
are today known all over the world, and
often used as example of innovation
and excellence.
It is my conviction, however, that beyond
publications and doctoral theses,
the most important contribution of
the IGC to Portuguese science in recent
times relates to the new dynamics
that the institute introduced into the
local scientific community and institutions.
The IGC has promoted turnover
and mobility in the community, established
full scientific and financial
autonomy of young investigators, as
well as the responsibilities of institutions
in terms of facilities and services.
For many years, the IGC was
essentially the only place in the whole
country where fully dedicated scientists
conducted research autonomously, for
the sake of science. Moreover, many
a science department at various Universities
and research institutions in
Portugal are now home to IGC alumni,
besides the hundreds educated by the
IGC, now working across the country
and abroad. All this has led to a dramatic
change over the last 10 years in Portugal.
I would like to think that the IGC
example contributed to that evolution.

O Instituto Gulbenkian de Ciência
(IGC) celebra, em 2011, 50 anos
desde a sua criação pelo Conselho
de Administração da Fundação
Calouste Gulbenkian (FCG),
a 19 de julho de 1961. Para nós,
cientistas, esta é uma excelente
ocasião para celebrar, uma vez
que o instituto permitiu as maiores
contribuições da Fundação para a
ciência, um dos seus fins estatutários.
É minha convicção que, para além das publicações
e teses de doutoramento, a mais importante contribuição
do IGC para a ciência em Portugal, nos anos
recentes, está relacionada com uma nova dinâmica
que este instituto introduziu na comunidade científica
e nas instituições locais. O IGC promoveu alteração
e mobilidade, estabeleceu uma autonomia
científica e financeira completa dos jovens investigadores
e responsabilizou as instituições no que
respeita aos equipamentos e serviços de apoio científico.
Durante muitos anos, o IGC foi essencialmente
o único local em todo o país onde cientistas dedicados
a tempo inteiro à ciência conduziam a sua investigação
em completa autonomia para o bem da
ciência. Muitos departamentos de universidades e
instituições em Portugal acolhem atualmente cientistas
que são alumni do IGC, para além das centenas
de estudantes educados sob a responsabilidade do
IGC que estão agora a trabalhar em locais espalhados
por todo o país. Tudo isto contribuiu, particularmente
nos últimos 10 anos, para uma dramática
alteração na ciência em Portugal. Gostaria de pensar
que o exemplo do IGC contribuiu para esta evolução.
