“Foi fantástico ter sido estudante de doutoramento do PGDBM. O primeiro ano
académico abriu os meus olhos para a beleza das questões científicas que esperam
por uma resposta e, durante o desenvolvimento da minha tese no estrangeiro,
senti-me sempre apoiado pela rede de professores e colegas deste
programa. Os programas de doutoramento do IGC têm formado gerações de
cientistas de sucesso e esta deve ter sido mesmo a mais importante contribuição
para o crescimento das ciências biológicas em Portugal no novo milénio.
Os programas foram-se adaptando e evoluindo mas, se fosse possível, concorreria
mais uma vez para o tornar a fazer. Quando é o próximo concurso
para estudantes de doutoramento no IGC”
“It was great to be a PhD student in the PGDBM. The first academic year opened my eyes to
many beautiful scientific questions waiting for an answer, and during my thesis work I always
felt the support of a network of teachers and colleagues. IGC PhD programmes have shaped
generations of successful scientists and may well be the most important contribution to the
flourishing of biosciences in Portugal in the new millennium. The programmes have evolved
and adapted but if I could I would apply again. When is the next call for PhD students at the IGC”
Os programas de doutoramento do IGC são
a continuação de um grande investimento
na educação graduada que está a decorrer
desde 1993.
The IGC PhD Programmes are the continuation of a strong
investment in graduate education that dates back to 1993.
Depois de terminarem o seu doutoramento, os estudantes do IGC,
nacionais e estrangeiros, juntam-se a uma prestigiada rede de mais
de 480 antigos estudantes, distribuídos por alguns dos melhores institutos
de investigação mundiais, companhias e outras organizações
relacionadas com a ciência.
Dos 101 alumni do Programa de Doutoramento em Biologia e Medicina
(PGDBM), que terminou em 2004, 69 regressaram a Portugal. Nos últimos
5 anos, os antigos estudantes que regressaram angariaram para
o país quase 20 milhões de Euros em investimento estrangeiro
(através de projetos de investigação e empresas de biotecnologia),
o que ultrapassa largamente o investimento total no programa.
After graduating at the IGC, our students, Portuguese or foreign, join a noteworthy
alumni network of more than 480, spread out across world-leading research centres,
companies and other science-related organisations.
Of the 101 alumni from the PhD Programme in Biology and Medicine (PGDBM),
which ended in 2004, 69 returned to Portugal and, in the last five years, have raised
almost 20 million Euros in foreign investment (in research funds and biotechnology
companies)-which largely exceeds the total investment made in the programme.
António Jacinto
Começou em 1993, no primeiro ano do PGDBM. Obteve o seu Doutoramento em Biologia do Desenvolvimento
e Genética pela Universidade de Londres, em 1999, e continuou os seus estudos de
pós-doutoramento na University College London. Em 2002 começou o seu grupo de investigação
no IGC e, em 2004, tornou-se responsável por um laboratório no Instituto de Medicina Molecular
(IMM), em Lisboa. Em 2011 mudou-se para o Centro de Estudos de Doenças Crónicas (CEDOC), em
Oeiras.
António Jacinto started as a student of the 1st year of the PGDBM, in 1993. He obtained a PhD in Developmental
Biology and Genetics from the University of London in 1999 and pursued his post-doctoral
studies at University College London. In 2002 António Jacinto set up his research group at the IGC
and in 2004 became a group leader at the Institute of Molecular Medicine (IMM), in Lisbon. In 2011 he
moved to the Chronic Diseases Research Centre (CEDOC), in Oeiras.

“The PGDBM changed me from a mathematician to the biologist that I am today,
from a Lisbon citizen to the world citizen I am now and gave me the opportunity
to work alongside the greatest minds in the world. At the moment I am doing
research in obesity, at Rockefeller University.”
Ana Domingos
Foi membro do 7º ano do PGDBM, em 1999. Desenvolveu a sua tese de doutoramento
na Rockefeller University, em Nova Iorque, e é atualmente pós-doutorada na mesma
universidade.
Was a member of the 7th PGDBM, in 1999. Ana developed her PhD thesis at the Rockefeller
University in New York and is now a pos-doctoral fellow at the same university.
