As videoinstalações de Maya Watanabe caracterizam-se
por uma precisão no movimento da câmara,
pela escolha de enquadramentos sustentados em
detalhes e fragmentos e pelo desenvolvimento de
narrativas e personagens circunscritas. Em trabalhos
recentes, questiona, a partir do seu país de origem,
a construção da identidade individual e coletiva
relativamente à memória do período da guerra civil.
Entre 1980 e 2000, o conflito entre militares e grupos
de guerrilha no Peru deixou mais de 70 mil mortos, 16
mil desaparecidos e 6 mil valas coletivas não exumadas.
O processo de investigação sobre a identidade destes
corpos e das suas causas de morte é fundamental ao
luto e é tema de Liminal (2019). Filmado em close-up,
o vídeo revela uma paisagem marcada pela passagem
destes corpos do anonimato à identificação.

Maya Watanabe’s video installations are distinguished
by the precision of camera movement, the
choice of framing based on details and fragments
and the development of narratives and the characters
contained therein. In recent works, from her country
of origin, she questions the construction of individual
and collective identity in relation to the memory of the
period of civil war. Between 1980 and 2000, the conflict
between the military and guerrilla groups in Peru left
more than 70,000 dead, 16,000 missing, and 6,000
unexhumed mass graves. The process of investigation
into the identity of these bodies and their causes
of death is fundamental for grief and is the subject of
Liminal (2019). Filmed in close-up, the video reveals a
landscape marked by the transition of these bodies from
anonymity to identification.
