ENTREVISTA
vindo de um ano extremamente complicado, com
queda significativa do PIB. Dito isso, para o segundo
semestre é possível que tenhamos variações positivas
no PIB, especialmente pela continuidade do
desempenho do agronegócio, além da recuperação
de algumas atividades que possam ser beneficiadas
pelo avanço da vacinação. Isso significa que um
melhor desempenho do PIB depende diretamente
do controle da infecção da Covid-19 no Brasil. Mas
como observado acima, existe a possibilidade de
seguirmos a trajetória do Chile e do Uruguai, o
que poderia minar esta variação positiva do PIB no
segundo semestre. Se tivermos uma retomada no
aumento no número de novos casos de infecção
por Covid-19, não haverá outra alternativa que não
seja o fechamento das atividades econômicas não-
-essenciais. E aí, a variação positiva do PIB estará
seriamente comprometida. Desse modo, a sociedade
APRESENTADO LIGEIRA QUEDA E VOLTOU A
SEGUNDO SEMESTRE
AFTER A ROUGH START AT THE BEGINNING
OF THE PANDEMIC, SEVERAL MARKET INSTI-
TUTIONS EXPECT GROWTH IN GDP FOR THIS
YEAR. DO YOU HAVE THIS SAME OPTIMISM,
AND WHAT ARE THE REASONS THAT EXPLAIN
THIS RESUMPTION OF GROWTH?
You have to be careful. In practice, we do not
have economic growth (of GDP) because the level
of economic activity is still below that before the
beginning of the crisis. Thus, what we have is only
positive or negative GDP variation. For example, in
the last quarter, we had a positive change in GDP. But
this was mainly due to the exceptional performance
of agribusiness, not necessarily due to a recovery in
economic activity. In addition, we were coming off an
extremely complicated year, with a significant GDP
drop. That said, for the second half of the year, it is
possible that we will have positive variation in GDP,
primarily due to the continuity of agribusiness performance,
in addition to the recovery of some activities
that may benefit from the advance of vaccination. Of
course, this means that a better GDP performance
depends directly on the control of Covid-19 infection
in Brazil. But as noted above, there is the possibility of
following the trajectory of Chile and Uruguay, which
could undermine this positive change in GDP in the
second half. If we have a resumption in the increase in
the number of new cases of COVID-19, there will be
no alternative other than the closure of non-essential
economic activities. And then, the positive change
in GDP will be seriously compromised. Thus, society
should take the pandemic scenario more seriously
and take action now to mitigate its effects in the second
half of the year. However, I do not believe that
we will do this, and we will once have to undertake
decisive measures to cope with the pandemic with
the closure of non-essential activities.
IN RECENT WEEKS, THE DOLLAR HAS
SHOWN A SLIGHT DROP AND WAS AGAIN QUO-
TED BELOW R$ 5. IS THIS A TREND FOR THE SE-
COND HALF OF THE YEAR, AND HOW DO YOU
EVALUATE THIS VARIATION?
Assessing currency dynamics is not an easy task.
But with the increase in the basic interest rate in the
economy, the trade balances provided by agribusiness,
and the expectation of an upward movement
in GDP, the exchange rate should remain very close
to R$ 5 to the dollar in the second half. Even if the
pandemic worsens, it is not feasible that the dollar
exchange rate returns to R$ 6.
