*S. b. saturata: 1m 2“imm.”m Mogi das Cruzes.
SP: 1‑5: Iris, bill and feet blackish. Notes: [A male of
S. b. saturata in breeding plumage was collected on 16
nov, two males in non‑breeding plumage on 20 nov
(Fig. 1). otherwise this very distinctive taxon is known
from only four male specimens (three of them in breed‑
ing plumage or nearly so), all taken in São Paulo, the
type (cat. no. 7928 in Senckenberg Museum, Frank‑
furt am Main) by Duschanek in the early 1800s on an
unspecified date and locality in São Paulo, one (cat.
no. 20.334 in Vienna Museum) by natterer on 18 Jan
1819 at ribeirão Goaió (Poá county, 2331/4620, 696 m)
not far from Mogi das Cruzes (hellmayr 1904), a male
in nonbreeding plumage (São Paulo Museum) by h.
Pinder at Ipiranga (2336/4637, 668 m) in the city of
São Paulo on 28 December 1896, and one (São Paulo
Museum) by Mr. Lima at Ipiranga (Vila ema) on 31
January 1900 (Pinto 1944). The taxon was feared to
be extinct until reported by A. Ribeiro in 2007 (http://
tinyurl.com/y862q9). It was described as a full species
by hellmayr (1904) who later (1938) remarked that it
“may prove to be a local race of S. bouvreuil”. Meyer
de Schauensee (1966) ranked it as a race of S. bouvreuil,
a treatment followed by subsequent authors. It
is surrounded by the three other races of S. bouvreuil
and differs distinctly by its chestnut instead of cin‑
namon color. The collecting of dull‑plumaged males
that bear no signs of being juveniles, within 4 days of
the collecting of a brightly colored male suggests that
saturata, like at least some congeners, attains a distinct
non‑breeding plumage. S. bouvreuil crypta (Ridgely
and Tudor 1989) and S. luctuosa (own obs.) are known
to begin breeding before attaining full plumage. The
general similarity in plumage pattern suggests that the
closest relative of saturata is S. bouvreuil.]
