abraham abrahamsson hülphers (1734–1797)
Släkten härstammar från Schmalhalden i Tyskland
och invandrade som stålsmeder till Nyköping
på 1630-talet. Abraham Abrahamsson Hülphers
bodde i Västerås och var son till handlaren och rådmannen
Abraham Hülphers och hustrun Kristina
Westdahl. A.A. Hülphers visade tidigt ett ovanligt
stort kunskapsbegär och var ovanligt musikaliskt
begåvad. Han försökte stärka sin hälsa genom resor.
Den första till Dalarna 1757 vilket resulterade i
en dagbok. Under följande tre år gjorde han resor
till Norrland och Lappland, Danmark och Ryssland.
Han skriver själv om sin drift att ”wilja lära känna
mitt Fädernesland, och underrättas om de fördelar,
det jag i mitt mått, kunde blifwa en nyttig medlem
i wårt samhälle”. A.A. Hülphers är en av de topografer
som mest ingående har beskrivit Norrland,
däribland en egen bok om Jämtland från 1775. Han
skrev år 1773 en historisk avhandling om musik och
instrument, särskilt orgelverk. Hülphers ägnade sig
åt handel i Västerås och hade år 1763 titeln direktör
med assessors rang. Han startade firman Hülphers
och söner tillsammans med sina två bröder år 1768
men trädde ur firman 1775. Gifte sig med Anna Kristina
Grave 1761 och fick under perioden 1762–78
åtta barn varav sex första var flickor. Vid hans död
donerades den Hülpherska bok- och handskriftssamlingen
om mer än 1 300 volymer till Västerås

abraham abrahamsson hülphers (1734–1797)
The family came originally from Schmalhalden in
Germany, migrating as steel smiths to Nyköping in
the 1630s. Abraham Abrahamsson Hülphers lived
in Västerås, the son of merchant and local justice
Abraham Hülphers and his wife Kristina, née Westdahl.
A.A. Hülphers displayed an unusual appetite
for erudition from an early age and was an outstandingly
talented musician. He tried to strengthen his
health through travel. His first journey, to Dalarna in
1757, resulted in a diary. During the next three years
he visited Norrland and Lapland, Denmark and Russia.
He writes of his urge to “get to know my native
country and to ascertain the benefits, that I might,
to the best of my ability, become a useful member
of our society”. A.A. Hülphers is one of the topographers
describing Norrland in greatest detail,
e.g. in a book of his about Jämtland, published in
1775. In 1773 he wrote a historical treatise on music
and instruments, with special emphasis on organs.
He went into business in Västerås, and in 1763 was
entitled director, with the standing of assessor. He
founded the firm of Hülphers & Sons together with
his two brothers in 1768, but withdrew from the business
in 1775. In 1761 he married Anna Kristina Grave.
Eight children, the six eldest of them girls, were born
to the couple between 1762 and 1778. At his death
the Hülphers collection of books and manuscripts,
numbering more than 1,300 volumes, was donated
